zdunham Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Hi all. So in the past I never really took care of reels, I would just replace them every couple years when they stopped working. Now I have two new ones and I want to do some maintenance on them. They both came with instructions showing you how to take it apart and say not to use all purpose oils or greases. What is good oil or grease to use for bearings and such? Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted December 3, 2009 Super User Posted December 3, 2009 http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1234086142 thats a nice thread about service on reels. Quote
shuddyssoup Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 One thing I could add, I use lighter fluid for the cleansing of the bearings. Seems as if the grease breaks down quick. If you go to the Shimano website there is also some information for baitcasting and spinning reels as a rule of thumb. They have good pics and are easy to follow. If you are willing to do the research you can find a lot on the internet concerning this topic. Quote

zdunham Posted December 4, 2009 Author Posted December 4, 2009 Thanks for the guidance guys I'll definitely be using it soon here. I've gotten so comfortable with the reels I am using that I don't want to change; plus I don't just want to throw around money buying new ones. I guess it is always good to know this stuff anyways. Thanks again. Quote
BobP Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Darn it! Another guy servicing his reels instead of selling them on Ebay. You are depriving me of my main source of cheap "almost new" baitcasters! Quote
zdunham Posted December 11, 2009 Author Posted December 11, 2009 Just ordered some stuff from the link Reel Mechanic! Thanks a lot. Skunked_again, good link I will definitely use that. Thanks guys. Quote

zdunham Posted December 12, 2009 Author Posted December 12, 2009 Remember to clean thoroughly. Never mix brands of lubricant in any application. Yeah I'm going to use the method in the thread that was posted, using the long acetone soak. Quote
Super User Micro Posted December 12, 2009 Super User Posted December 12, 2009 Not to take anything away from frem Reel Mech, since he's in the Reel Mech business. But learning to maintain my own reel has enhanced my enjoyment of fishing. It gives me something significantly fishing-related to do when I can't actually fish. Learning what lubes to use is important. Having proper tools is important, too. I've invested in a set of tool that I use exclusively for reel maintainence. Good quality screwdrivers are a must. I just found an oil bottle that I really like. Made of for gun oil, it puts out a very controllable drop of oil, much better than trying to apply it with the plastic bottle it came in. http://www.deweyrods.com/cgi-bin/ccp5/cp-app.cgi?usr=DEWEY27750&pg=prod&ref=O1&cat=SPEC&catstr=HOME:SPEC Quote

Fishbone Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Micro,Your not taking anything away from me... If any angler wants to learn to do this on his/her own, I will support them in any way I can and have since 06. I have my book "Table Top Reference Guide to Reel Maintenance" out since 06, and, a few more that are in the works. We have been selling our oil in a needle nose oil bottle and other related tools for doing the job for over 6 years now, and our clients aren't spending 11.00 dolors for an empty oil bottles. When we leave here the first of the new year we will continue to..... Have a good holiday season...... Tight Lines All!!! What do you mean "leave here"....what did I miss? Quote

Follow your reels manual, looking for oil, grease, tools, etc. look here. http://www.***/shopping/storefront.html Good Luck & Tight Lines!!! Just realized I never said what kind of reels they are. Neither of them are expensive as I couldn't afford a really expensive one until recently but I still want them to work nice; I hate wasting things. Daiwa Procaster Tournament 100 Pinnacle Platinum Plus LP100 Not sure if anyone would be able to answer this question. I have schematics for both reels and I have gotten the first ball bearing out and a sleeve after it. There is a part called One Way Clutch Assembly. On the schematic it says it is supposed to come out next but I cannot figure out how to get it out. I know this is probably hard to answer without a picture but if anyone has worked on similar reels would you be able to help with this? Quote
