alberto Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Hey guys i was wondering where you all buy your parts to upgrade reels? Like reel handles and bearings and so on. Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Bearings from Boca Bearing. Handles from Plat, http://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/default.php Or Japan Fishing Tackle. http://www.bass.jp/reel.php?c=reelp Mikes Repair also sells a limited number of parts. http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/index.php?osCsid=93b60ee2b005915195f3d78a01e05cc0 What reel are you upgrading? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 14, 2009 Super User Posted December 14, 2009 Mike's Reel Repair is in Canada, and is a last ditch for OEM parts. I generally get my OEM parts from the OEM. Aftermarket parts, like bearings, I have a few suppliers, Boca, VBX, Smooth Drags. Handles, knobs, spools, etc., anywhere I can find them, including the above listed as well as eBay and online forums. Quote
brushhoggin Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 bass resource's very own reel mechanic. heard nothing but really good things Quote
alberto Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 Th ereels that i have that i want to upgrade and make as smooth and as best as they can get are 2 chronarch 50mg, a shimano curado 300e, revo stx, and a revo toro. Im just looking at getting the best parts to give them a tune up and better performance and maybe at the same time make them lighter. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 The entire Revo line responds REALLY well to a breakdown, scrub, degrease, and lube with quality oil and grease. That stock ABU Silicote stuff is crap, and breaks down rather quickly. Not sure you'd see any appreciable gains trying to make a 50mg any lighter. All you have to do to the Curado is clean the grease out of the spool bearings, and lube with Bantam oil. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 You'd be better off replacing the crankshaft bushing with the comparable bearing on the Curado. I don't remember the sizes, but they are easy enough to measure. Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 You mentioned doing work on Revo's so I thought I would throw this out there. I got part numbers today from PureFishing Australia. Duralumin gear set in 7.1.1 The guy was really helpful and confirmed that the main gear, pinion and main drive shaft are all duralumin. Main Gear 1192816 Pinion 1192814 Main Shaft 1192812 These are parts as listed for a Revo Elite Aurora. I'm waiting for Pure Fishing USA to give me a price. They refused to do any investigating to help me out. They forwarded me to PF Aus and they were very helpful This should reduce the weight a bunch. If you break down a revo you will realize how much the gear system adds to the weight of the reel. Also in a review I was reading of a Quantum and Shimano both with almost identical gear dimension, the Alum gear in the Quantum was 5 grams, and the Shim 13 grams. That was the main gear only. Quote
alberto Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 I dont know if it is just myself or there are no upgradeable bearins for any of the shimanos. i was lookig at the boca bearings and nothing there. alberto Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 Didn't even think about it that way. I guess it's time to get the caliper and start measuring. I.d and o.d should be all the measurements and aswell as the thickness. I'll get measurements and then start my quest again thanks again for all the info guys Quote

Super User J Francho Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 While I somewhat agree that most do not need bearing upgrades, I certainly do not agree that ABEC5 stainless are "better" then ABEC7 ceramics. "Better" is too subjective. Quote
