fishinwidow Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 My husband is an avid fisherman, mostly bass and also trout. I know he want some fluorocarbon line for Christmas but I'm unsure what poundage to buy. Can someone recommend the correct weight to buy for bass/trout fishing? Thanks! Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted December 1, 2009 Super User Posted December 1, 2009 Ouch! Fishing is like golf -one club doesn't cover. First, a question: Will this be for spinning (rod has large line guides and a straight handle) or casting tackle (rod has small line guides and probably a finger trigger on the handle)? If you aren't sure of the details of his fishing, I would suggest getting a spool of say 3 different lb tests: Spinning: 6, 8, 10 Casting: 10, 12, 14 These would be useful for many applications. If you are on a budget, then maybe a spool of 8# for spinning, 12# for casting. As to brands, I'd suggest Bass Pro Shops XPS. I would avoid 'Vanish', 'Transition', and 'Viscious' -three common and inexpensive brands with reputations. I'm sure others will chime in with good ideas too. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 1, 2009 Super User Posted December 1, 2009 x2 on the XPS line. If I were you, I'd get him a BPS gift card, though. Quote

Super User Raul Posted December 1, 2009 Super User Posted December 1, 2009 If I were you I would give him a BPS gift card. Never ever my wife has purcahsed me any kind of fishing tackle I like/need/want. ( oh well, she got me a Helicopter Lure kit when we were dating many moons ago : ..... haven 't had the heart/courage to trash it :-/ ) . Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted December 1, 2009 Super User Posted December 1, 2009 J Franco is right get him a gift card. Gift cards seem tacky to some people but most fisherman would prefer to buy a specific brand & weight when it comes to fishing line & tackle in general. Quote
seyone Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 The gift card is a good nobrainer, can't go wrong. If you still want to by him line, you could ask him specifically what he is looking for. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 2, 2009 Super User Posted December 2, 2009 A gift card is the best choice, but to address your question: Buy two spools of line: Yo-Zuri Hybrid #6 & #12. #6 is for spinning tackle, #12 for baitcasting. He can exchange the "wrong" spool and have two spools of the "right" line. Yo-Zuri Hybrid is inexpensive and available at most major retailers. I suspect your husband will be surprised that you chose an "exotic" line, something much more interesting than common Trilene. 8-) Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted December 2, 2009 Super User Posted December 2, 2009 I think "common" Trilene XL in 8# for spinning and 12# for baitcast would be a good safe choice. As others have said, unless I know what a fisherman uses I would not buy anything fishing related. Most of us are very picky about fishing tackle, i.e., brands, sizes, colors, etc. Some of us even take a strange pleasure in the process of looking for, and buying tackle. A gift card with the promise of a night/day out using it would make a fine gift IMHO. Good luck. Quote
fishinwidow Posted December 4, 2009 Author Posted December 4, 2009 Thanks for the info/tips. I know a gift card would be easy and appreciated but how cool of a wife would I be if I got the gift right and he loved the line? I think I'll go snooping through his tackle bags and see what he already has to get an idea. I'm not sure if he has any fluorocarbon line yet so I don't know if he'd be really picky on the brand. I just want to make sure it's good quality. Quote
