brushhoggin Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 i have the 20 lb suffix on a high speed revo and whenever i try and cast far it catches and just plops down in the water in front of the boat. it doesnt birdsnest it just catches and stops abruptly. is this line too flimsy? power pro seems to be the most popular braid out there but it seems a little waxy and stiff. but is that what i need to overcome this "catching"? does it limber up pretty well through use? thanks guys Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted November 28, 2009 Super User Posted November 28, 2009 You would be better off with a larger diameter line. The diameter of the 20# is the same as 6# mono. Would you use 6# mono line for the type of fishing you do? A heavier line would reduce the digging-in on the spool which is causing your problem. The 20# can be successfully used IF you install it and keep it packed tight on the reel spool. Most don't do that so a heavier line is better. Quote
brushhoggin Posted November 28, 2009 Author Posted November 28, 2009 roger that. that makes since. i'll pick out some 50 lb suffix. i like the limberness of this line. thanks a bunch. this has been a prob with me for a hot min. i appreciate the advice. Quote
fmoore Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Without a better description, what probably happened is that you didn't spool the line on the reel under relatively heavy tension. If you didn't, there's your problem. I would be inclined to move up in line size, but it's not necessary. Maybe try stripping the line off the reel and re spooling it under a fair amount of tension. That should solve your problem. Quote
zelmo Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 I use that 20/6 Sufix and have no problems when casting with my curados. I have all kinds of problems when using it on the revo premier. Is your revo new to you? Quote
brushhoggin Posted November 28, 2009 Author Posted November 28, 2009 it is new. are u telling me i need a shimano now?! :-? Quote
b.Lee Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 i think he is just saying you may need to use the reel more and play with the setting. to get the results you need. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 28, 2009 Super User Posted November 28, 2009 I don't believe the line is the issue , getting the reel set up the correct way will probably solve your problem. Quote

Super User .RM. Posted November 28, 2009 Super User Posted November 28, 2009 Don't need no Shimano or new line.... 20 lb suffix on a high speed revo and whenever i try and cast far it catches and just plops down in the water in front of the boat. it doesnt birdsnest it just catches and stops abruptly.Says to me the reel isn't setup right, it isn't the lines fault. You set the reel to cast short cast one way, and you set up the reel for long casting another way. Sounds like you could tighten the cast control when your trying to long cast, setup loosely and the spool on the initial start up will let line lift off of the spool, and will slightly cross over and settle and lock onto the next coil and cause the abrupt stopping of the spool. Also could be the rod is to short/stiff for the setup to cast light lures, small dia. line long distance. Just a thought......... Tight Lines!!! [pun intended] Quote
zelmo Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 i think he is just saying you may need to use the reel more and play with the setting. to get the results you need. Yes. I just meant I find the Revo to be very touchy in it's settings. Quote
brushhoggin Posted November 28, 2009 Author Posted November 28, 2009 it doesnt happen every time. and i understand you gotta adjust cast control when changing lures but if i tighten it, it wont let me cast far. ive fished with it for a while so ive messed around with the brakes and whatever else. it doesnt happen on my other revo but it has mono on it. i'll try winding it on a little tighter. btw i'll be sending my reels to you for cleaning and such Reel Mechanic. 24 years of service you must know somethin! Super User dodgeguy Posted November 29, 2009 Super User Posted November 29, 2009 it's only your reel if the line is looping and snagging on the loop.if not it's digging in.20lb is to thin for a baitcaster.on top of that i would switch to fireline braid.use at least 40 lb test even 50 or 65.fireline braid is the roundest braid made and does not dig in.i've used them all and i know. Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted November 29, 2009 Super User Posted November 29, 2009 if you want good braid , get a spectra line . those other dyneema and polyethylene lines fray to much , they might be quieter but that does not make them better . POWER PRO and P-LINE SPECTREX are your best choices , go to 30# in either brand lines ( power pro or p-line ) and you will be good to go !!! btw , i use 30# power pro on my REVO SX 7.1:1 reel and can cast it all day without a backlash or line digging ........ Bayou Bass Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 20lb braid is not too small. I use it on my curado for inshore fishing and it casts a mile with no problems. My fishing buddy uses 15lb braid and he loves the stuff. Quote
brushhoggin Posted November 29, 2009 Author Posted November 29, 2009 yeah im gonna try tying on a heavier line tighter this time and just experiment. practice practice. im overwhelmed by the help here thanks a ton guys. anything else? as far as brake setting suggestions or anything? Quote
Bayou Bass Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 Start with breaks and spool tension high so your casts are not as far. As you get more comfortable casting slowly ease up on the tension and breaks until you get good distance without backlashing. Your rod and the weight of the lure will have a lot to do with the cast also. Light lures casted with stiff rods will tend to cast the lure downward resulting in backlashes. Start with heavier lures until you feel comfortable then work on lighter stuff. Good luck!! Quote

Edro Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I have used braid for a while, and have found that if you don't spool it really tight you get those little knots. When the line is spooled on to loose and you put tension on the line, the line will dig in and cause it to catch on the next cast. I use power pro with a line conditioner. I would just tie the line off to a post or something and walk all the line out. When all the line is out tighten your drag really tight and wind it back on as tight as you can. This really helped me. If you have already tried this i would just go for the bigger diameter. Braid will dig into the spool if it is not spooled on extremely tight, and it will cause what i call a wind knot to form in the spool. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted December 2, 2009 Super User Posted December 2, 2009 Even on spinning gear I use 30 lb Fireline Tracer braid, which is 0.011" diameter (8-lb mono equivalent). Wind knots, line-twist and burrowing are about as common as whooping cranes. Roger Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 3, 2009 Super User Posted December 3, 2009 I use 15 or 20# braid salt and 10 or 15# braid for freshwater. I get plenty of knots in freshwater mostly due to top water popping or pause and twitching jerkbaits, mostly with 10#, not as much with 15#, just part of the deal. Seldom do I knot up in saltwater as the presentations are more of a constant retrieve, like a spoon, but it will happen from time to time. Quote
