southtexasbassin Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 what is the best setting for the line guide nut? Should it be tight or loose? I am having trouble with a reel that I have. It seems to reel the line in fine then all of a sudden it stalls on the left side of the worm shaft going back and forth like if the pawl is missing the grooves of the worm shaft. Then it seems to correct it self after several cranks of the reel handle. Can anyone give me some insights? Quote

The Rooster Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 They're not supposed to be loose. What model reel is it?? I've read recently that a lot of BPS Extreme reels have this trouble. As a user of the Extreme, I have yet to see this in any of mine, but it seems to be a very common occurrence in them for others. Quote
southtexasbassin Posted November 24, 2009 Author Posted November 24, 2009 The reel is a abu garcia black max 5 bearing reel. I usually use this reel for friends that tag along. I don't lend them my revos so ill let them use the black max. But it was my first baitcaster, so i want to keep it working. I recently took it all apart and cleaned it, greased, and oiled it. Seems to be working great. hasn't stalled anymore. I dont know how it would need work when everything looks to be in good shape. Quote

The first tell tale sign of a Garcia® reel (needing service or pawl replaced) is the line carriage hanging to one side or the other. Tight Lines!!!! Quote
southtexasbassin Posted November 25, 2009 Author Posted November 25, 2009 I had not done anything when I originally posted. Now I understand what you meant by having my reel serviced. It can mean a cleaning or a new pawl like you mentioned. Should the line guide nut be nice an tight then? Thanks for all the advice. Quote

It is called the pawl cap (not a Line guide nut), and it is only finger tight. Tight Lines & Lot's O Turkey!!.... Quote
