Original Carrot Stix vs Kistler Magnesium vs Loomis Mossyback vs BPS J/M Elite.

Those are the rods I want to use.

I've got a BPS J/M Elite and I love the rod.

I like the idea of saving the $50 on the Carrot Stix and the Kistler.

I have the Loomis SHR 821 and love it, but the prices are always really high compared to similar performance from others.

Even despite the $$ I can't help but be drawn to the lifetime rod investment in a Loomis.

The Loomis rod I'm looking at is the Mossyback 7'1 BCR 852 or 853

Thoughts and opinions please.

i think i would stay with the johnny morris.that's all i fish.guys on this site will laugh but i don't think you can buy a better rod.the elite has recoil guides and the signature series have fuji titanium frame sic guides.you can't go wrong with either one.they are light and sensitive and have imho the best reel seats made.from what i hear if you go to a bps and return one they replace it no questions asked.

Seriously, if you are considering the Loomis, and you are willing to spend the money... why not get it.

I would say the Kistler.  The only thing I don't like about it is that it has Hardloy guides but if you're not using braid and watchout for the tip, then they are a non issue.  I have a Carrot Stix but I prefer the Magnesium.  I'm not a big fan of the JM rods, granted I've never fished one, but I don't find them all that light and tend to look else where for rods in the same price range.  Even though I really like the BPS reel seats, I feel that above the Pro Qualifiers, when on sale, the rods are overpriced for what they are.  As for returning one, good luck, it seems it's the luck of the draw, BPS only covers rods for 1 year and if ordered online, they aren't covered in store, so I've been told by BPS.

You positive you looked at the Elite J/M rods?

They are lighter than the mossyback rods for sure, and not much heavier than the Carrot stix.

If it weren't for that rod I would easily just buy the Loomis. I really feel you are getting more rod for the money with the J/M Elite rods. I just know that the warranty of Loomis rods is rock solid reliable.

I own a Kistler Magnesium and have owned a couple Johnny Morris Signature Series rods (still have one), but in that price range I prefer the St. Croix Avid. They feel lighter in my hand than the Johnny Morris, and I prefer a full cork grip for most applications/techniques so that puts them ahead of the Kistler in my book.

FWIW, the Johnny Morris I used to own was the 6'10" MH/XF casting rod and it handled like a broom stick. Too stiff, too heavy, and poor sensitivity. My 6'6" MH spinning rod, on the other hand, has been fantastic.

I fish the JM-Elite rods as well, and they are light, tough, and sensitive.  However, as stated before, no St. Croix on that list???  I have 4 JM-Elites, 1 Falcon Expert, and 3 St. Croix rods that I fish with. A Legend Xtreem, Legend Tournament, and an Avid.  My JM-Elites & Falcon clean up on Cranks, Swimbaits, Topwaters, & Spinnerbaits, but my St. Croix's are all used for soft-plastics only.  You can't beat the feel & feedback you get from a St. Croix.  Try one and you'll be hooked

BTW....... don't waste your money on a Carrot Stix rod. They are snap happy.  I tried the originals first & broke two in a row on the hookset, and then tried the 21 Carrot Gold Stix and the finish was peeling off after the 1st use. (I also snapped that one on a hookset as well. I returned that one to BassPro for a St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass rod. Well worth it

I'd go with the BPS rod or the Mossyback.  I don't like the Carrot's guides at all, and the Magnesium rods are just ho-hum as far as balance and weight.  Just my opinion of course...

If memory serves me right, checked out both.  The Elite was lighter than the Sig. but didn't really like it.

so unless you are constantly breaking rods like some loomis lovers i know the jm elite would likely be a much better purchase.

No I don't break rods. I've broke one ever when I was about 13.

I've had two break on me, both were not mine, and both happened while fishing.

Funny thing is I bought a Falcon Lowrider about 7 years ago. It was a huge step up in quality for me back then. It's still going strong for my sister-in-law.

What J/M Elites do you have? I've got the 7'6 MH 3/8-3/4 XF. I'd like to get a 7 ft M or MH. I generally like rods stiffer than what I think most do. But for this application I need a XF tip and plenty of backbone. For fishing weightless and light TX rigged worms.

If their 7ft rod is the same power and action as the 7'6 rod it would be perfect.

FWIW I'm really thinking about trying one of the spinning rods too. One to double as a tube and drop shot rod.

i have one of the first year jm elites with a foregrip.i like the foregrips so the rest of my rods are signature series.it's a 6-6 mh fast tip.i use braid so to me it's just as sensitive as my buddie's glx with braid at half the price.i have never broken a jm rod.my buddy breaks approx 4-6 glx rods per year on hooksets.maybe he's just an animal.loomis rods are nice but i don't think they are worth 2 times the price unless you are one of these guys constantly sending rods back.

No offense but teach that guy how to set a hook, how to store them, or detect a fish from a tree, that is just plain dumb.

I would go Loomis unless you are getting the Carrot for around $100. Nine out of ten rods break because of people doing things like drilling trees, trying to lift things in the boat with them they shouldn't. or storing them incorrectly and creating weak spots imo.

seeing the guide problem the stix had is enough for me to pass on them at any price.

out of the 3 id keep looking at rods. if i had to choose id take the mossyback per reviews by other members.

If you're breaking rods like that, then you either need to find a better rod or learn to take care of your equipment better and I don't think it's the rods that are the problem. Sounds like he may be a little itchy at the trigger

undoubtably it's his fault.that's why the loomis for him is a great buy.he keeps on breaking them and getting new ones for $50.for me imho it's not because i don't break rods and i am happy with the jm rods.

What do you intend using the rod for?  All my rods are Loomis' and I have many.  The Mossyback is a good rod but I only use Mossyback for flipping because sensitivity isn't really an issue.  The BCR853 is hands down the best worm rod on the market (actually, I haven't used the Megabass rods YET) but don't sell yourself short, get it in the GLX.  The GLX BCR853 is worth all $400. 

Don't worry about the rod breaking on hook ups unless you're a complete tourist and have no clue on what your doing.  And if that's the case then you shouldn't be fishing Loomis anyway.

You won't find ANY rod in BassPro that compares "as good" as the Loomis GLX BCR853.  People often say "for the money, _____ rod is just as good as the Loomis."  Well, that's horse poo.  If that's the case, then just get a bamboo cane pole.

I have a Loomis rod and the JM elite rod.

It's just a fact that at that price point there is more rod per $ with the elite rods than the Loomis rods.

I can't figure out why everyone says GLX. Of course they should be good. They are double the price. If I'm looking at $200 rods I'm probably not looking at $400 rods.

I like the warranty. Just like everyone else. But fact is you are PAYING for that warranty. Big time.

Well I posted on here about my 21 Gold Carrot stix issue with the guide. It's a shame because I love the feel of the Carrots but the guides are just horrible IMHO. I'd simply just pay to have new guides put on but what if the rod breaks and I need a warranty repair? I'm probably done with carrots unless they come out with some new ones that have some quality guides.

If you have the money buy loomis! I have a carrot stix gold and love it! had it for a year and I fish it every day.Never broke it or the tip is not showing any wear.Most of the guys here dont like the carrot stix's but I do.I love my loomis also, but it was 2x as much. Is it 2x the rod? I dont think so. Just my .02
