I'm probably going to be referred to an article for this question but I'm too lazy to find the appropriate one on my own.  So here's my question:  What's with all the additional hardware (beads, swivels, etc.) on a carolina rig?  Is all of that necessary?  I mean, can't I just secure a sufficiently heavy weight in front of my worm/lizard/creature bait without the extra hoo ha?  I can't see how a soft bait can cause enough line twist to mandate a swivel.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The C-rig is meant to attract the fish under difficult conditions like weedy or deep water where all the hardware has a role to play:

1.- Egg shape shinker: it 's meant not only to sink the rig, the egg shape allows you to DRAG the rig allong the bottom and not having it hanging up on everything.

2.- Glass bead: to create a clacking sound when the sinker hits the glass bead, also to protect the knot tied to the swivel.

3.- Swivel: to reduce the line twist on the bait

4.- Leader: not only to conect the hook to the main line but to allow the bait to float above and behind the sinker, also, depending upon the poundage of the leader is to increase the resistace to abrassion and tension, you may have 10 lb test line as main line while your leader can be 20 lbs test.

im with you farmpond, if im gonna c-rig i'll probably cheat and crimp on a 1/4 clam shot weight a bit up the line and thats it lol. i really dont see a need for the hoo-hah either. im sure it has its purpose, but im not picky enough to mind it.

Uh.....That would be a split shot rig.

Like Raul said. Everything has its specific purpose. If you don't like tying all those knots then get you some Carolina Keepers. A C-Rig can be the best bait on a tough day. It covers allot of water and it catches tough fish.

Get you some caolina keepers from bass pro or your local tackle shop.  It eliminates the need for a swivel and you only have to have one knot instead of 3.  i like them because all you have to do to adjust leader length is a pair of pliers.

Dave,

You should know what a split-shot rig is.

There is a time and place to fish the Carolina rig so read about it and try it.

It is also a way to feel what is on the bottom, like grass, rock, soft bottom, etc.
