Hop Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 I am looking for a 6 1/2 to 7 foot spinning rod that is rated to handle lures from 1/8 to 3/8 oz or larger and can perform well with lines from 4 to 10 pound test. I would like a reel to go with it that I can buy spare spools for 4,6,8, and 10 pound test being able to handle at least 100 yards of the 10. This will be a rod that I keep in my truck and will be ready for me to grab whenever I am driving around and I come across that water that I say"Man I wish I had my rods with me" I plan on packing a small tackle box with some basic fundamental lures also. Thanks for any help. Quote

Hop Posted November 6, 2009 Author Posted November 6, 2009 Your budget is a vital piece of info here... I am sorry I did not even think about that. The least expensive the better but I would probably go as high as $150.00 to 175.00. It will get beat and banged around alot I am sure. Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Just remember there is a flea market/classified section. If you shop around you can get a BUNCH more rod/reel for your money. In that price range I'd like to try one of the Carrot Stix, with a used Pflueger Supreme....The used reel should get me in under or close to budget. Quote

Thanks for any help. I keep a combo like that in my car/truck at all times. It's a 2-piece 6'6" M/F St. Croix 'Triumph' with a Mitchell 308Xe and 20# PowerPro. It's nothing special or flashy, but it gets the job done without beaking the bank. The reel definitely isn't the smoothest I've used and it has a bit of handle 'slop', but the drag is decent and I picked it up for $15 in the clearance section of my local Walmart. The braid does a good job of handling the temperature extremes of riding around in a vehicle's trunk and also helps make up for some of the sensitivity loss you experience with a 2-piece rod. I picked it out of the same clearance section for $4. The combo is cheap enough that I'm not too worried about anything happening to it, but not so cheap that I worry about it falling apart while I'm using it. Quote

ReelMaster Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 I use a Bass Pros Extreme XTR66MLS-2 with a with a Pflueger President 6735X for that very purpose. Wait around and the Extremes may go on sale in the next couple of months. Quote
