bryand82487 Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 I would like to get a swimbait rod to target big bass and striper. I think I'm going to purchase one in the spring and would like some opinions from those who are experienced with these. I know nothing about fishing swim baits and do not own any. I know very little about striper but have gone a time or to and caught a couple. I'm looking at maybe getting a Daiwa Pluton and putting it on a G. Loomis Swim bait Rod 904 7'6" Medium or a G. Loomis Swim bait Rod 953 7'11" Medium. I have no idea what size swimbaits I will be throwing or what size I need to be throwing. I will be fishing mostly on the river below a dam in current for the striper and probably stick to the river for fishing for the bass with swim baits. Any help would be appreciated. Quote

I know a lot of swimbait guys really like Okuma's Big Bait series. They got great reviews from Tackle Tour and they are also pretty cheap. Quote

Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted October 24, 2009 Super User Posted October 24, 2009 i would suggest that if your set on a G.LOOMIS , get the 955 7'11'' medium heavy . that way you can throw a wider range of baits . btw , that pluton is a tank !! i would suggest a shimano calcutta or cardiff , a diawa luna is also a good choice . i , myself use a REVO TORO 51 , i love this reel ( i prefer low profile reels ) Quote

Bronzefly Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 I would go with the 955 over the 904. I use the 904 for smaller swimbaits like the 3:16 Baby Wake. It also makes a wicked super spook rod! The 955 is much more versatile and the Pluton would make a sweet match. I use the 956 for the 3:16 Wake Jr. as I find the 955 slightly underpowered for it. Swimbaiters are a funny bunch and we all have our own preferences for tossing the big baits! Either way, enjoy the endeavor as it's an addiction within an addiction for sure! Quote

Mattlures Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 I am realy liking my curado 300. I also love my Calcutta 300te. I havent played with any loomis swimbait rods but Okuma makes an incredible rod for the price. If your trying to get one set up for an all around, you will want to go a little extra on the pwer. An Okuma 7'11 Xhvy or 7'6 hvy. I am sure there in an equivalent loomis but I have no idea which model. Guys......? Quote
Bronzefly Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Hey Matt - I also really like the Curado 300 - that's what I have on my 955. I use round reels for heavier duty stuff. The Pluton is a super sweet reel and will make a FINE swimbait reel. Big, round, heavy, whatever - so are the Calcutta TE's, but they're amazing as well. "All around" is hard when you talk about "swimbaits" - swimbaits can be anything from a paddletail to an Armageddon. Without knowing the range of baits, it's hard to make a reccomendation - but the 955 would be one to suit most guys needs who are getting into hard swimbaits. It's great for your hard gill too! Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 I have the SWBR953, which I use for deep diving crankbaits and paddletail type lures. It is great for those lures and this rod is rated for up to 2 ounces, but that would be pushing it. I also have the SWBR904, which I use for a little heavier lures like Mattlures Bluegill and Lucky Craft Real California. It handles those lures perfectly and probably could handle a little more (the 3 ounce maximum lure weight rating I think is right on). If you suspect that you will be throwing lures heavier than 3 ounces, as others have said, I would look at the SWBR955 Quote
bryand82487 Posted October 25, 2009 Author Posted October 25, 2009 After looking at swimbaits I don't see myself using anything other than baits like the mattlures blue gill series, jackall swimming ninja, paddle tail lures, and others of this size and type. But, who knows since I know nothing about it. If I went with a heavier rod would it still give those baits the action they need or should i go with the SWBR904 if those are the lures I plan on using for now and just get another setup down the road if it comes to that? Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted October 25, 2009 Super User Posted October 25, 2009 yeah , that's the reel . when your throwing big swimbaits , you really take a beating throwing all that weight cast after cast so most people want the least weight in their gear . for instance , i have two swimbait setups , one is rated for 2-6 oz. lures/baits and that rod weighs approx. 5-5.5 ozs. it's a 7' 11'' rod as is my other swimbait rod that is rated for 3-8 z. lures/baits . that rod weighs about 6.25 oz. the 2-6 oz. i have a revo sx on it , the 3-8 i have a revo toro on it . the toro weighs 10.3 ozs. ,the pluton weighs 12.75 ozs. that 2.5 ozs. is quite a difference !! anyhow , if those are the baits you are only gonna throw , you don't even need a ''swimbait set-up'' , you can throw those baits on a standard heavy powered rod or a flipping rod and any low profile bait caster . you can use 12-17 lb test line for all of the baits you mentioned . a round reel or larger sized low profile reel ( shimano curado/ revo toro ) is needed because of higher test line (20,25 and 30 lb. test ) so my advice is get a nice flipping rod and put your favorite low-pro reel on there and you are set ..... Super User fourbizz Posted October 25, 2009 Super User Posted October 25, 2009 One of my favorite combos is the 7'6" Okuma XH with a Calcutta 400 TE. Thats like an 18 ounce combo. Weight doesnt bother me. If those are the baits you are really set on, you probably will be better off with the 904, but if you ever want to step it up to some of the midsize baits, it wont be enough. Quote

I dont think this will be your last swimbait combo...the other swimbait rod I like is the JDM Megabass White Python, paired with a Calcutta 250DC. Check it out... Quote

Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted October 26, 2009 Super User Posted October 26, 2009 another rod you should check out is the DOBYNS 795MLSB, this rod really excells at throwing small swimbaits and can handle medium ones also. if the handle is too long for you , get the DOBYNS 795SBMT . you will really love this rod , in my opinion , WAY better than the G.LOOMIS rod you were thinking of Quote
