garry77 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Just wondering some opinions before I buy.I have some Zoom horny toads now and a couple XPS frogs. I'm looking at the stanley ribbits and the gambler cane toads.Anyone have any experience with these and how they perform? Feel free to include techniques and rigging options, lol.(this may reduce the learning curve for me.) Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 11, 2008 Super User Posted January 11, 2008 Stanley Ribbit or Sizmic Toad Quote
Super User Tin Posted January 11, 2008 Super User Posted January 11, 2008 I have not used the Sizmic yet but I have used the Ribbits, Cane Toads, Buzz Frogs, and Horny Toads. If the frog is on top being reeled in and making a disturbance the bass will find it and destory it. So imo a soft plastic frog is a soft plastic frog is a soft plastic frog. Hook up ratios were all about the same too. Quote
skillet Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 IMHO Ribbit on Gammi 4/0 or 5/0 EWG hook... As Ever, skillet Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I have used Gambler Cane Toads, Sizmic Toads, Zoom Horny Toads, Yum Toads, Ribbit's, and the Power Bait Frog. I prefer Gambler Cane Toads and Sizmic Toads far above and beyond anything else. They outfish all other toads for me. Aggressive fish love any of the toads, but have found that picky fish want the Cane Toad or the Sizmic. If they are particularly finicky that day, I use the smaller sized Sizmic toad, which is half the size of any other toad on the market. I have had 20 bass days on just the small Sizmic toad in Pumpkin/Pearl belly version. Awesome bait. I don't even bother with any of the other brands anymore. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted January 11, 2008 Super User Posted January 11, 2008 The horny toad is heavier than water, so I only use it for subsurface work (zigzag fall pattern). Among the "true" topwater toads my favorite has got to be the Gambler Cane Toad. The cane toad floats with a 4/0 super line hook, which is needed to prevent rollover caused by the strong kicking action. Even at very slow crank speeds the cane toad will cause quite a fuss and is pure dynamite during a topwater bite in any water clarity. The back ribs on the gambler cane toad are slanted forward like the gambler ugly otter. Rigging it upside-down may produce a little more vibration with no noticeable loss of foot action. Another excellent "true" topwater toad is the Sizmic Toad, the "4.25" high floater" (likewise floats with a 4/0 super line hook). I've tried every imaginable retrieve, but in the main the most productive retrieve is usually a rock steady speed that makes it easy for bass to draw a bead. I'll typically use the slowest speed that keeps the lure on top and keeps the feet active. Needless to say, during a red-hot surface bite you can burn the cane toad over the surface Roger Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I agree with you 100% on the Cane Toads RoLo. They're the best floating toads out there and make the most fuss with those boot feet. Make sure you guys buy the Floater Cane Toad though, most of them are not floaters. Still good, but most of them sink unless you buy the floaters. I also prefer a steady and slow retrieve, but with the floating Cane Toad you can pause it in pockets and it will stay right on the surface. I also like Horny Toads, but you do need a faster retrieve to keep it on the surface, and the action is more subtle. On the plus side, they are heavier and cast farther (and more accurately - they're very streamlined) than any other toad I've tried. I originally started my toad fishing with the SIZMIC toad, and they're definitely fish catchers, but I prefer the other two I mentioned over the SIZMIC. Quote
Tpayneful Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I like the Horny Toads and the Ribbit (Non-floating). The Horny Toad is for a fast retrieve and the Ribbit is for a slower retrieve. I find that some days they want the fast retrieve and some days they want the slower retrieve. I do not like the floating Ribbit. It is too light and I can't cast it very far at all. I use the Horny Toad hook or the Owner 5/0 twist lock keeper hook. I used fluorocarbon line last year but this year I got a new combo and am going to string it up with braid. Fish the toads and you will love it! Quote
Shadcranker Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I vote Ribbit and Bull Ribbit (around larger fish). two favorite colors are white and catapilla. the Ribbits seem to have more action that the Horny Toads due to larger "feet". Quote
BassFishingMachine Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Can't go wrong with the Stanley Ribbits. Best soft plastic frog I have fished so far and Ive tryed Zoom Horny Toads, Gambler Cane Toads, Sizmic Toads, and the Yum Buzzfrogs. Stanley Ribbit has the best action and gets me the most strikes out of all of them. Quote
Super User Micro Posted January 12, 2008 Super User Posted January 12, 2008 I mainly fish Zoom Horny Toads, but I'm looking forward to trying Strike King Rages this summer. Quote
Buckeye1955 Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 I'm partial to the Case Plastics/Madtoms. They stay upright and have a great leg action. They are a great smaller outfit to deal with too. When I ordered my frogs they sent a care package with one of everything they made. You won't get that from the big guys! Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted January 12, 2008 Super User Posted January 12, 2008 I mainly fish Zoom Horny Toads, but I'm looking forward to trying Strike King Rages this summer. The rage toads make the most commotion, bar none.It feels like a crankbait with all the resistance.Extremely loud and in your face action. They are incredible,as is the shad, fished the same way.I've been using these on choppy water when the extra action is needed. I have been wondering though sometimes if these are TOO aggressive for bass if they are in a spooky mood? The only prob I have so far is that the rage toad/shad dont seem to work too well when worked real slow. To get max potential they need to be fished fast and hard. They also show very little action when allowed to sink and twitch. My favorite toad for subsurface work and sinking into holes is the sizmic. Favorite toad overall for any condition is the ribbit. Quote
