Super User Paul Roberts Posted October 16, 2009 Super User Posted October 16, 2009 I wouldn't expect that question from a purist ;D I'll ask anything to keep a discussion going. Trouble maker I am. I guess when I said the word "Leverage" I meant it in a different way. Not to mention, we're talking bass hear, not 150lb salt water fish. Although what you said may hold true about power, it's on a much smaller scale when it comes to bass. I was implying more the fact that I can steer a fish away from structure that I do not want it near. I do a lot of short casting in close areas, longer rods help me lead the fish much easier. There's a reason why almost every company is now offering a ton of over 7ft rods. I actually read it as you meant it advantageous rather than technical leverage'. But some of us are just picky, which leads to good conversation. Good thread I think. Quote
NBR Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 The longer the rod the faster the tip is traveling with the same effort. If the tip is going faster the lure is going faster. Therefore it will fly farther before it touches down. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted October 16, 2009 Super User Posted October 16, 2009 There's another element too: See roadwarrior's response in this thread, about casting distance and rod action. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1141187546 Quote
steezy Posted October 16, 2009 Author Posted October 16, 2009 I'll be able to test this theory, got a new 7' crankbait rod on the way, will be here tomorrow by 10am Sat morning. Quote

Therefore it will fly farther before it touches down. In reality, it's physics rather than theory. Speed and power move in opposite directions like a seesaw (hi-gear vs. lo-gear). If the rod-tip is traveling farther with the same effort at the angler's hand, that's proof-positive that the angler is dealing with reduced power (a NON-stroker rod). As previously noted, speed will give the angler greater distance, but only at the expense of power (it's a choice). Roger Quote

Roger I suppose that's why softer rod potentially casts further -because of increased tip travel? Quote
steezy Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Steezy what did you get ? I going to try one of the new Shimano Cumara Reaction rods. I bought the 7' Med for shallow & medium cranks. I have a core 100 reel thats 6.x gear ratio, it should make a nice crankin combo. The MedHeavy would probably be better if I was doing deep cranking. Its being shipped overnight from ***.com for Sat delivery so I can try it out tomorrow. Quote
