Retrofan Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I have been thinking about trying some ultra light equipment to make the catching of the 1-3 pound bass I have been finding even more fun. While at a WalMart today out of town waiting for a meeting to start I walked back to the fishing stuff and found a Shakespeare Ugly Stick Ultra Light spinning combo marked down to less than half price (paid $15) and some 6 lb Suffix Elite mono line for $4.50. I bought the stuff and am looking forward to getting out and trying my less than $20 investment out. Any tips on how to fish the UL spinning stuff vs. the baitcasting 12-14 pound line I have been using? Quote
I.rar Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 i like using smaller cranks. makes setting hooks alot easier. when i do use soft plastics , i rig them tex-posed (i think thats it , where you dont bury the hook back into the bait). the super fluke jr has always cought bass for me t-rigged with a 1/0 ewg gammy but i also use any other smaller profile plastics i have with as little to no weight as possible. i use 1/32 to 1/8oz weights at the heaviest if i need to get the bait out further. i moved my cardinal 801 with 6lb line up to light duty and picked up a shimano sedona 750 and some 4lb XL for the ultralight. the 6lb wasnt giving me the distance i wanted. i havnt been out with the 4lb yet but i can imagine it would help. good luck and have fun with it. mrlitetackle Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 on my UL (sahara 500 and fish eagle II 5'6" ul...spooled with suffix braid 2-6)... i enjoy throwing very small baits (as to catch the small to decent bass, as well a panfish)... bitsy minnow (is one of my fav's) also on the "bitsy" line... but not sure of the name?? it looks like a tiny worm though... produces very well... i cant remember the name of my other fav.. but i will add a pic below of it... also... i cant stress this enough.... BEETLE SPINS!!!!! they kill on the UL...(as well as in general IMO) as far as my tech. let'em run, cause if they're big then they're gonna...... and keep the drag light..... (most often you will be using tiny hooks!) face it, you can only hold light line on these..... and you still wanna keep the little ones fun ...cant set the hook all that well with an UL either mainly bc of the flimsy aspects of the rod. thats where i believe that the braid has the best advantage for these setups. happy fishin' to ya man! i love my UL, ps........... here's the last bait i could not remember..... and finally, beware of these on the UL... looking4structure Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I'm a big fan of the UL spinning gear.I bought 2 UL setups from Academy for 20$ a piece. Both quantum.I put 6lb Trilene xl on one and 6lb Sufix Elite on the other.I like to use the Zoom Tiny Brush Hog Texas rigged with a 1/0 Gammy G-lock hook and 1/16 Tungsten weight.Had a alot of luck with Bass.Caught a 3lb Bass on that setup.Alot of fun fighting a fish on UL tackle.I also like to use Roadrunners, and Rooster Tails.I might catch Perch,Crappie, and Bass on those little things.Get ready because when you set hook the fight is on. detroit1 Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Mr. litetackle...please! NO more pics of you naked-fishing...couldn't you crop that pic a little? Quote
Super User Marty Posted October 7, 2009 Super User Posted October 7, 2009 No doubt ultralight is great fun. I had a good year for large bass, but my most enjoyable fight was a two-pound smallie on UL with 4# mono while trying for panfish. But I would advise only to us UL in relatively open water. Using it in heavier cover will lead to more breakoffs and I don't think any of us like to lose tackle or have a fish swimming around with a mouthful of crankbait or whatever. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Mr. litetackle...please!
