Braided.........Mono..........Fluro???

I need to put new line on my baitcasting setup that I use for Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, surface lures, and frogs.

What is the best way to go now with all the new technology in lines?

I'm currently using 15lb Spiderwire mono...........but I've been thinking of trying out a braided line for added strength and the smaller size.

I would never use the same rod for cranks and frogs...  :-/

But you will be amazed with braid if you have never tried it.

I recently found out that I don't like braid.  I found it to be more of a hassle than it's worth.  I prefer a copolymer for all of my apps, p-line cxx to be specific.  I use 10-12lb for cranks, 12lb for spinnerbaits and topwater, 12-15lb for bottom baits (trigs and jigs),and 20lb for flipping jigs and trigs in cover and swimbaits.

Floro will limit you from using surface baits correctly, cause it sinks.  This will throw off the action of your frogs.  I use mainly braid, I love the stuff.  I use Suffix Performance braid in the 30# size, its the same diameter as 8# mono.  It rocks.

Frogs - Braid

Cranks and Spinnerbaits and topwater - Mono or Co-Poly

I like some stretch in my line when using Cranks, SB, and topwater because it makes it a little more forgiving on hooksets witch results in more hookups. If I need my line to float I just rub some wax on the last three feet or so.

I use Fluorocarbon on all my sinking baits like jigs, t-rigs, jig-heads an so on.

According to Ike:

Mono for treble hook baits.

Flouro and copoly for anything.

Braid for heavy cover and deep water.

Just a suggestion.

I'm new to braid this year myself. At first I hated it but for me the addition of a mono leader has made all the difference. I get the shock absortion and invisibility of mono with the strength and sensitivity of braid.

I have my spinning combo set up for fishing tubes with 8# fluro.

I use my casting combo for about everything else, but I am going to be picking up another casting rod for an old reel I have.

I think I'm going to set up my current casting combo with a braided line since it's a med-heavy rod.

The new casting setup I'm going to set up is going to be med. weight, so I think I go with mono.

I stayed with Mono on them..........12lb SpiderwireXXX on my medium baitcaster, and 20lb SpiderwireXXX on my Med/Heavy baitcaster.

Been using Mono for years, can't see a reason to change now.

Fluoro: Sub-surface, deeper than 6 feet.

Mono: Shallower than 6feet, or topwater. Best for treble hooked baits, like crankbaits, for stretch it offers.

Braid: Very versatile. Good for shallow water as it floats. Good deeper probing weighted presentations too, like a C-rig. Best thing going for dense vegetation for low stretch and ability to cut through weeds. Poor choice for wood as it can cut into wood. You can also knot on a leader of any length, say 20ft of fluoro to fish deeper, or 8feet of mono for topwater, or none at all for a frog over dense mats. Get to know the J-Knot.

All you guys using mono for spinnerbaits.....have you tried FC? It is far superior for spinnerbaits IMO.

I recently switched to P-Line CXX 12 lb. At first I had lots of managability issues, but now that I've fished it a few times they have gone away. I highly recommend it. I think it's the best of all worlds. It's strong, sensitive, and abrasion resistant at very good price compared to flouro and braid. The only thing I think I will ever use braid for is jerkbaits. I believe the smaller diameters create better presentation.

I like to fish heavy cover, and have all of my rods except one with braided, the other has mono.  I used the mono for a top water frog, and the braid for spinner, crank, and a t-rig worm.  I have been using 30# that has 8# di if it were mono.  What are the advantages to Fluro?  What types of baits do others like to throw on Fluro?  I am new to this forum, and have found the information very helpful so far.  Also what types of rods do you'll find helpful for different baits?  I have to baitcasters that are medium and 2 spinners that are medium.  One of the spinning reels has the mono on it.  Currently I have a spinner bait, and a t-rig on the baitcasters and a top water (with mono) and crank bait on the spinning reels.  Just looking for new things to try?
