Tx.Pancho.81 Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I have a Mojo Jig-n-Worm Rod that I fish almost daily. It is one of my favorite rods. This past weekend I had a brain fart and reeled a swivel through the top 4 guides and trashed the inserts. I've talked to a local rod builder about replacing all the guides with Fuji Titanium Framed SiC guides. Would putting these guides on this rod be a waste of money? Should I just send it to St. Croix? Your thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 22, 2009 Super User Posted September 22, 2009 How much is it going to cost to replace them with SiC guides as opposed to getting the rod fixed/replaced by St Croix? Quote
sal669 Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 If I would be in this situation I would send it to St Croix Quote
Super User .RM. Posted September 22, 2009 Super User Posted September 22, 2009 I would say no, they use "Batson Forecast hard aluminum-oxide guides with double-plated black chrome frames". But you don't have to go that far/expensive (Fuji Titanium Framed SiC) just replace them with Fuji® Alconites, and pay better attention to what your doing... Just the .02¢ of an old rod builder.. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!! Quote
Super User flechero Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 I've talked to a local rod builder about replacing all the guides with Fuji Titanium Framed SiC guides. I'd just replace the 4 you ruined... and wouldn't bother to spend the extra cash on Ti Sic's. (alconites are better than what you are replacing, IMO) Save that money and put it towards a new custom rod when you save enough to do it right. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 Send it to St. Croix. They might repair the rod, but chances are good they will just send you a new replacement! 8-) Quote
Uncle Leo Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I also think you should send back to St Croix. They have an upgrade program and the Mojo qualifies. May be an opportunity to move up if you so desire. Quote
Super User flechero Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 Send it to St. Croix. He'll pay more in shipping charges than the repair actually costs. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 You'll spend as much on shipping it back as what it would cost to replace the guides. I'd just replace them with Alconites. If it were higher-end rod, I'd consider Ti/SiC. Quote
Tx.Pancho.81 Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 Talked to St. Croix and they recommened I send it in using their Gold Star Plan. Their rep did not give me a set price but said the repair would be no more than $50 and I would have to pay shipping both ways. The local guy said he would do it for $20 plus the cost of guides (going with alconites on just the top 4), so I left it with him. I decided I'll just put the money I would have spent on the upgrade toward a new rod. Maybe a nicer St. Croix or I might even see what all the fuss G.Loomis creates is about. Thanks for all the replies. I've been lurking on the forums forums for a little over a year and think its a great place. Pancho Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 24, 2009 Super User Posted September 24, 2009 Welcome aboard! 8-) Quote
ALbasser Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I would send it to St. Croix personally. You may spend more on shipping than the repair would cost, but I would be worried about my warranty being voided if repairing it elsewhere. After the warranty is up I would just get it fixed locally, but like roadwarrior said, St. Croix would probably just send you a new rod. I don't have any experience with dealing with St. Croix, so I may just be paranoid. Just something to think about. Quote

I would be concerned about the warranty after getting other people to work on it as well. Also, with St Croix you can ship your rod for $10 if you use FedEx. Quote
