RyanZ Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I wanted to make this post. Im currently in the market for a new spinning reel. I want to stay towards shimano or penn. This reel should be able to hold 10lb line and be durable, I fish alot of rivers and its normal to dip my reel completely under water. Im just trying to get some advice on what new reels are good out there. Im looking to stay within the range of 75-150 dollars. If anyone has any tips, or suggestions on what i should get please let me know. I will be fishing for smallmouth/largemouth/wallaye with this reel.. Ryan Z Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 Why is it normal to dip your reel under water all the time ? You will need a reel that has a sealed drag system. Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 The Daiwa Tierra has a water sealed drag, but since there are no reels that are water tight you 'll have to do exactly what it needs to be done every time your reel gets wet ( sealed drag or not ) dry it. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 Count your money and match it to the Shimano that fits it. Quote
RyanZ Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 any shimanos in mind that i should steer towards? As for why its common to dip my reel underwater, im not trying to obviously, but I wade the rivers im fishing and once and a while i hit a hole and the reel goes down under water, or you hit a bolder and the current takes you over....basically im in the water the whole time, so the reel goes under from time to time. Craiger12 Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Mono/flouro/copolymer --> Shimano Saros Braid ---> Shimano Stradic For either reel I would recommend the 2500 size for those fish species. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 i have 2 of the shimano saros. i highly recomend that for you, they do have the sealed drag...and in your price range... really, i have nothing bad to say about these reels... they are great. but of course, not fully sealed... so if you dunk it, you'll need to clean it (and that would be so for any reel you buy ... unless you want to get a van staal... but that'l be about 900 bucks ) as for.... Posted by: Craiger12 Posted on: Today at 6:56pmMono/flouro/copolymer --> Shimano Saros Braid ---> Shimano Stradic For either reel I would recommend the 2500 size for those fish species. not sure that i get that reasoning, or if there is any reasoning to that statement.. i have suffix braid on both of my saros, one is 8-30 the other is 6-20, and it works flawlessly, braid will work on most any spinner well, i have braid on my sahara as well.... again, flawless. to think that you would need the stradic for braid, or say that the stradic would be better suited for braid just makes no sense to me. Craiger12 Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 The Stradic FI (as well as the Sustain and Stella) has different gearing from the Saros that will wrap line tighter and will prevent braid from digging in and improve casting. I have a Saros and I do use braid on it successfully. However, it will dig in each time I bring in a fish or anytime there is considerable force on the line. I suppose this will happen to a certain extent regardless though. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 ive never had an issue with line digging in the spool on either of my saros, or the sahara. in fact the only reel that i have had an issue with line dig, was the daiwa tierra spinner...... dont know why it was, but it was a real pain in the @ss.... so kept that one with mono, and with the mono it worked great..... that is.... until i got rid of it........for another shimano Quote
Lard_Bass Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Stradic 2500FI, hands down. If you want to save some money, the Saros also has a waterproof drag. Quote
Bronzefly Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I like the Shimano Stradic FI toward the upper end of your price range - the Symetere FJ is also a great spinning reel for $100. Quote
Lard_Bass Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I agree with the Symetre but it does not have a waterproof drag (which starts on the Saros line). Quote
SammyLee Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I fish the Saros 2500 and like it. If I knew I was going to dunk it all the time I would try to dry it after each outing and accept that it will not last as long as one that stays dry all the time. I have no experience with that, I've only dunked the Saros two or three times in my float but it makes some sense to me that a wet reel will fail faster than a dry one. $129.00 reel that might last three years wet is still not a bad deal. I have the Saros, the Sahara and the Cronarch and love all of them. The fish you see here was caught on the Saros with 8 pound mono in thick weeds with an St. Croix Avid medium, fast 6'6" I think he'd go about 5 pounds and I pulled him out of bu!! kicking hydrilla. Kinda lucky on my part. BTW, That was at Pickwick just fooling around at the boat ramp of the primitive campground. Quote
Five-Alive Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Shimano Saros or Stradic are both amazing reels. With Sradic coming out with a new version you may find a discounted price on the 2009 models somewhere. Quote
