Koop Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Let me start off with saying I prefer Power Pro to Fireline. That is my preference, so do not make this a debate between the two please. I have used 30-65# power pro for quite awhile with no issues. A friend of mine bought a spool of 20# today at Gander Mountain, spooled it on his brand new reel. We went fishing right after he got his new set up all ready to go. We hit the water and on his 2nd or 3rd cast, the line *snapped* mid cast. This happened again about 50 minutes later. The reason I am 100% sure it snapped and was not a bad knot is because I was throwing a crank. My crank successfully retrieved his lure and about 10 yards of line. I checked his guides and they were all perfect, nothing that could have frayed or damaged the line. Again this spool had been purchased *today* and spooled today, and snapped. Possibly just got a bad spool of line? What could have caused this if it wasn't the guides? This just blew my mind when I saw it happen the 2nd time, and then I retrieved the line, I had thought it was just a bad knot. I've never seen braid just snap like that before. :-? Quote
central.PA.bass Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 hmmm... i had 30lb powerpro on my one frog rod.. i figured that would be fine for the areas that i fish... well the one day i went out and was throwin to some lilly pads and hooked a 12-13 inch bass... it got tangled around some pads so i went in after it. instead of reaching down and grabbin the bass i tried liftin it and the lilly pad up and snap... the line broke and the fish swam away with my spro frog in his mouth... needless to say i dont know if i completely trust PP anymore especially after reading your post... ArcticCat500 Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I cant comment on how or why it broke but I fish 20 on my spinning gear with no trouble...the only time I seem to have any trouble with PP is if I fish an afternoon in the rocks, then I cut some back and retie. Quote
VolFan Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I've seen a few of these "Braid breaks Midcast" threads and we might consider this: Due to braid's limpness, especially Powerpro, a loop of slack can for during a cast, if this loop catches, even momentarily, on a rod guide or anything else, the shock can snap the line at the weakest point, usually a nick or manufacturing defect. Just throwing it out there. Quote
Use ONLY Stren Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I like what the Volfan has to say. (Other than him being a Vol fan of course.) ;D ;D I look to embrace all the great tennessee traditions, like singin rockytop all nite long after we beat florida next year. Lane Kiffin what a bone head. Sorry about jacking the thread I had to do it Quote
Koop Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 needless to say i dont know if i completely trust PP anymore especially after reading your post... This was not intended to deter anyone from using Power Pro, I still do and will continue to use it as I have never had a problem with it before. I'd also suggest a higher test braid if your fishing pads. heya koppa, i've only used pp on my reels, but 30# on up never less than...my buddy has done it many times...and i've witnessed the entire thing twice...which i believe it was his technique...he'll cast overhead with a real fast hard whip cast sometimes and snaps his line...no stretch at work...but the difference is its not 10 yards up the line as your saying... except once that i know of that he didn't completely get out all the lash in the spool...and thats what happened with his new spinnerbait, first time used, it went to the bottom with yards of line attached... my first thoughts, is that 20# is dang light and if he had a little lash that wasn't completely out and had just enough to catch at that point...with the speed/energy in the line when casting...it very well would of/could of with just the smallest catch left in the spool... otherwise i've always spooled up pp without issues... p.s edit i just read & agree also with volfan with the loop/shock deal... I find it interesting, both times were also on a overhand cast. Volfan's logic seems sound. I wonder if Bantam could comment on this and what his views are. I'm not sure if maybe my friend got a bad spool from gander, or if Volfan is on the mark with his idea. Quote

Lily pad stems have breaking strengths of approximately 18lbs. If the fish wrapped you around just a couple stems then the strength of the vegetation was already stronger than your line. That's why most guys fish much heavier braid around pads. Quote
BassThumb Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I'm a big fan of Power Pro if it's used properly. I used to have that happen often when I was using Power Pro #20/6 and under on casting reels and casting hard with heavy lures(3/8 oz +). It is due to the line diameter being too thin for the reel and it's cutting into itself because it's not wrapping around the spool properly. I switched to 30# and it never happened again. If you saw 20 and 30 side by side on casting reels it would be easy to see how the line is cutting into the spool on the 20#. Too bad I tossed so many nice lures into the water before figuring this out. :-/ Quote
Bantam1 Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Shoot me a PM with your email. I can send you a form that you can give your friend to send us with his line for testing. We will replace the line under warranty. With the smaller diameter braided line I have seen a backlash cause the line to snap at a later point. The line can dig into itself and make a small cut. This is now the weak spot in the line causing it to fail under a load. The spool could have been mislabeled. The line could be 10 pound but with a 20 pound sticker. Personally I do not fish braided line lighter than 50#, but thats just me. Quote
