Super User retiredbosn Posted September 19, 2009 Super User Posted September 19, 2009 Anyone have any experience with this reel? I have looked everywhere to find the IPT of the reel and have come up empty. I'm looking for a round reel for cranking, and need one with 21 IPT or less, I have a Abu 4600C3 for some cranking, but really want a lower IPT for deeper and also floating wake baits. Any info would be appreciated. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted September 19, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 19, 2009 I've seen a couple of Old Black Max round reels on Ebay lately, been thinking they would be good cranking reels. What do you think? Quote
oldschoolbasser Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 The Black Max's have a 6.3:1 gear ratio so it may be a little faster than you need for cranking.I use an older 4600C for crankbaits whether I'm throwing small Fat Raps,or big Poe's.The gear ratio is 4.7:1 and handles both baits well. kikstand454 Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 i have had six old round black max reels and they cast and reel and just fine. all of them though, have had the same problem with the levelwind. it gets wore out and sticks to one side for a few turns and that REALLY doesnt agree with braid. i used them for saltwater as an inshore "big" reel. they were good. i too was going to use one of the slightly newer ones to crank with but then i got an awesome quantum mg... and so thats that. Super User dodgeguy Posted September 20, 2009 Super User Posted September 20, 2009 i've used the trion rounds and they are fantastic reels.i sold all my aBU REELS AND BOUGHT TRION ROUNDS.i have to disagree with the mudster on this one. Quote

Super User retiredbosn Posted September 20, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 20, 2009 Solved my IPT problem, the C3 holds 170yds of 10lb test, ripped off 50yds, left 120 yds on the reel and the IPT like this is 21. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted September 20, 2009 Super User Posted September 20, 2009 Dig around on Ebay for a early to mid 70's Abu round reel. Those ran around 3.8:1 ratio before Garcia bumped them up to 4.7. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted September 20, 2009 Super User Posted September 20, 2009 retiredbosn, is the 21 IPT before or after a cast? Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted September 20, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 20, 2009 Before Quote
Super User islandbass Posted September 21, 2009 Super User Posted September 21, 2009 Before Maybe you can add back the 25-30 yards or so for the cast or max cast. That way, you'll be at 21 or close to that for the retrieve. Just a thought. It would also bring you closer to fuller line capacity for casting ease. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted September 21, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 21, 2009 Yeah stripping the line is just a temporary solution. Will shop around to get the right reel. Even the dark side is trying to seduce me with a Curado 200E5. HELP ;D Quote
Super User flechero Posted September 21, 2009 Super User Posted September 21, 2009 Even the dark side is trying to seduce me with a Curado 200E5. HELP ;D I spend a little time on the dark side, but that's a $160 solution to a $25 problem. If a new reel is what you want, why not just send your C3 to ReelMech and have a set of 3.8:1 or 4.7:1 gears installed? It will also get tuned up while it's there. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted September 21, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 21, 2009 It is a fairly new reel, and don't think the gears switch out, will drop him a pm and see. You know I had pm'd reelmech and asked him about the EXT's I have, didn't think to ask if he could regear the C3. :-[ Quote
