JoshL Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 i Fish in western washington, im still kind of a rookie, and i am using hand-me-downs for my rod/reel combo ive fished with a shimano bantam b mag 1000 on a mitchell gt plus rod that my dad bout over 20 years ago...its time to upgrade... im looking into buying the quantum energy pt with the 7.0-1 gear ratio on a cabelas prodigy rod. 6'6" or 7' medium heavy. any advice on the setup? and this will be my only pole. central.PA.bass Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 If you are looking for a deadly combo i would go with Revo S paired w/ a BPS Bionic Blade.. 7' MH.. the reel has a 6:4:1 gear ratio which is a very versatile gear ratio.. Bass pro shops has a combo listed on their website... just go to freshwater fishing then rod and reel combos.. its listed there.. I personally own 3 Revos.. i have 2 in the STX and 1 S... I will never own another brand of reels.. as for the rod, if you read this and many other forums, you see nothing but praise for the "bang for your buck" of the Bionic Blades... I personally do not own one but for $169 i believe it is hard to beat that combo... Quote

If you are looking at spending money then why buy a Cabelas rod? I could name you about 20 different rod brands that are better than Cabelas Quote

central.PA.bass Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 ive never used a HML.. they may be great rods.. ive just never used them.. if you check out ***.com they have some great fishing gear.. the customer service is top notch.. and if you spend over 50 dollars you get free shipping! so i would be looking there if i were ordering anything... if you live near a cabelas or bps, i would go there first and just get a feel for some of the rods, and then order them off of tackle warehouse.. The Revo is also a great reel for the money. I love my abu but for the money the curado IMO is the best reel in that price range. Quote

If I may, I think you ought to consider looking at the Lamiglas line of rods. Their competitor series is excellent bang for the buck if the Certified Pro line of rods is a bit too steep. The Compres as Rooster recommended are ultra-solid and will not let you down. Don't know what part of West. WA you're in but if you're close to our Cabela's, Sportco or Outdoor Emporium will have the Lamis and Loomis rods. Whole Sale Sports, which was formerly Sportmans Warehouse, is the only place I know that carries the Compres. If you have to go the Cabelas route, I don't know much about the XMLs but I do have one of their casting Mag touch rods. I am not talking out of fluffy air with those rod recommendations either. I have lamis, certified and competitor, the Cabela's mag touch, and the Shimano Compre and Clarus rods and I wouldn't have recommended them if I didn't think they'd serve you well. As for the reel, choose one from a company whose reputation preceeds itself. Personally I would not choose the house brand reels unless they were "version" from like Daiwa and I wouldn't pick a reel based on some Pro's name either and that's just me. Quote

ChiCityBasser Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I don't have the Quantum reel to comment on from personal usage but from reading some of the reviews and getting a feel for it in the store I will be picking up one next year. I have last years Energy PT and its a great reel and the new one is lighter which makes it even better. I don't have the Cabelas Prodigy but have picked them up in the store as well but can't really comment on them. Other members here have them and can better chime in on the rods. I do have 5-6 Cabelas XML rods in both 1 and 2 pc Spinning and Bait casting and love them. I have the the 6'6" 1 PC W&J MH bait casting rod and the 6'6" 2pc R&J M rod also and they care great. Very sensitive for both rods with the applications I have used them. I pretty much use crankbaits mostly but getting to use worms and jigs with these rods has opened me up to more techniques as well as using them with tubes and shakey heads. These 2 XML rods are paired with a Quantum Accurist PT BC with 30#-12Fireline Smoke for the Bait casting setup and a BM1000 Spinning reel with Power Pro 8# test. I also have a ML setup which is a 6'6" ML XML paired with a Shimano Sahara 1000 with Original Fireline 20#-6 that works great with smaller cranks and spinnerbaits. Not knocking the other rod choices but I would go with the XML's over any of them. Quote

JoshL Posted September 20, 2009 Author Posted September 20, 2009 ok i really appreciae the help guys i went out last night and bit the bullet... i bought the shimano curado on a 6'6" mh cabelas brand mag-touch i havnt put it down since about 3 p.m. until just now i love it i put 15lb fireline braid and this is some smooth and yet tough stuff ;D Quote
