MOLD ON REEL HANDLES

I have about a dozen rods, some aren't even used yet.

I have them stored in my basement and some of them now have mold on the handle . What can i do to prevent this?

PS the rods are highend rods g loomis, st croix & diawa steez so i doubt its due to cheap material & the mold is both on the cork  and the eva foam.

Well Cart does have a point there, but if mold is growing on the handles of your rods I 'd said that the basement environmental conditions are allowing the mold to grow, what kind of mold ? man I wouldn 't be in your basement without a face mask, I don 't want to catch lung aspergilosis.

Dark, humid & poorly ventilated basement ----> rod and health hazard.

I store some of my custom rods in my basement.

The best way to keep the mold down is use a de-humidifier and keep the humidity at about 50%.

I store my DVD collection (800+ of them) down in my media room (half of that basement), and have never had any mold or health problems, even when the water table (which is quite high now after our last 8" of rain) gets to high.

The other way to fix those cork grips would be to dry them in the sun and seal them, as for eva sun dry and like I said dehumidify...

Id be more worried about mold growing in your walls than the rods honestly... You should go and scrape all the mold off the walls if there is any and put in a high quality dehumidifier.

Clorox bleach kills mold. Mix some up in water, you don't need much bleach at all, I'd say 10/1 water/bleach mixture, maybe even less, and use a wash cloth dipped in the water and then rang out to where it's only damp, and you can clean the mold off of your rod handles and walls and all. If you have a spray bottle, so much the better. Otherwise use rubber gloves. Use a paper face mask as well, no matter what. For cork handles it will make them clean like new again.  For EVA though, I don't know if it will take the color out or not.
