umahunter Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 i have recently got into hollow body frogs and decided i need a better setup since its a style of fishing i really like. i am trying to decide between three curados. the 200e7 in 5.0.1 or 7.0.1 or the 300 in 6.2.1 ive heard differences in opinion of speed vs power most of the places i fish have that prickly grass beds and floating string grass and tulies so i may be pulling a fish along with alot of grass. the rick clunn 701 i have now ain't cuttin it. the reel will be going on a Powell 735 mh thanks for your opinions Quote
Koop Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 To answer your question directly: I prefer a 7.x:1 when fishing frogs. Lets you get into the strike zone, and back up for another cast faster once you leave the strike zone. You can always slow your retrieve. That being said, I frog fish with an STX, which has a higher drag (the HS has 18# drag) setting which is also very important fishing frogs in thick slop. The curado's drag setting is rated much lower in the same speed(11 for the 7 and 12 for the 5). So if I were to fish put a curado on a frog rod, it would be the 300 (drag rating of 15#)or in my case 301, sine it has the higher drag setting of them, would be the compromise between retrieve speed and drag. Some think 15 or 18# of drag is over kill.. if your like minded and think 11# of drag will be sufficient for your needs then grab the 200E7. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 I also like a higher ratio for frogs to get them out as quick as possible. I honestly don't think the excessive drag is necessary, nor is the added bulk of the 300 size Curado. I think the E7 would be your best bet. Quote
Bronzefly Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 One more vote for the Curado E7. I fish Guntersville quite a bit in the fall and I've been very pleased with the performance of the E7... I see no need for either a 300 sized reel or a slower ratio reel. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 E7 works great with my G. Loomis frog rod so the E7 should work well with any heavy frog rod. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 which curado for frogs ? THE GREEN ONE, next question Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 E7, it really allows you to take up slack quickly, which really comes in hand when a bass blows up far away on a long cast. Quote
Super User David P Posted September 9, 2009 Super User Posted September 9, 2009 Not sure if you're big into Shimano only, but I'd highly recommend taking a looking at the Revo STXs, especially given that they are on sale and can be had for under $120. The drag is stronger, and they're built like tanks. Perfect for frog fishing. Also, you definitely should go with a high speed reel, there is no doubt about it. Huge advantage when frog fishing. Super User Dan: Posted September 9, 2009 Super User Posted September 9, 2009 I use an STX (not the new one) for froggin and jigs. I'm happy with it so far. I think you'd be happy with either reel. BTW, the $20 rebate on Revos has expired. Quote
umahunter Posted September 9, 2009 Author Posted September 9, 2009 by the way where can they be had for around 120 i haven't found em that cheap anywhere or im looking in the wrong places Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 9, 2009 Super User Posted September 9, 2009 *** has them for $139. The $20 rebate would have made them $119 but it has expired. Don't know if brokeju knew that or if he maybe has some other discount info. Quote
Koop Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I agree I was trying to reference a curado for you earlier but I much prefer the STX for frogs and jigs. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I have a friend selling 4 NEW STXs for $100 + shipping! I use an STX 7:1:1 for frogs and love it. I would say get the HS version of whatever reel you want. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted September 9, 2009 Super User Posted September 9, 2009 definely get a high speed version , i use a REVO SX 7.1:1 and it works excelllant to get the fish from digging into the grass and muck . plus you can skim the fish over the grass with such a fast retrieve , i am a true believer in getting the fish ton the boat/shore/dock as soon as you can .
