Any Wavespin reel fans You Should be

Been using a Wavespin reel for the past year or so, and like the operation and design. But, the chrome paint on the reel is flaking off. Anybody having similar problems?

Sent an email to Wave spin last nigh, and within a hour received the fowling reply;

The chroming process for nylon is less than perfect at times as you now know.  I can send you a new chrome piece for you to replace old one with, or you can send the reel to me for warranty and we shall do it for you.

Another solution, is to simply remove the rest of the chrome coating from the nylon, but it will of course not be as pretty.

Chromed nylon has it's flaws at times and we can not explain why some chroming holds perfectly while yet others do exactly what your reel is doing. It could be the type of oils that some use have a negative effect,  We do know that those who fish in saltwater experience the problem with the chrome much more than fresh water anglers ever will as saltwater is very caustic to chrome as it is so many things.

The factory has supposedly developed a new chroming process and that process or a change in materials will begin sometime next year.

I shall leave it up to you as to how you would like to proceed, simply let me know as we shall always take care of our customers.

Refreshing to have customer service that cares.

Peel it off yourself, but it won't look as good is not an acceptable option for good customer service in my book. Taking back the reel ( which they said they would do) is a good option, but to replace it with a reel that is still made using a process they know to be defective, is just not what I look for in a reel. This reel is borderline gimmick to begin with, I fished one for 2 days ( friend Mike bought one) granted to be fair not enough time to give a qualified review

I had a couple of " guest " reels with chrome paint, Penn captiva & Abu cardinal 177, both reels peeled just like the posters.  The reels performed well but as with any " disposable " reel they found their way into the trash.

Penn makes some terrific reels, the captiva is entry level.

I have several Wavespins, and a couple of the brand new smaller versions. I really like the smaller ones. The drag is very impressive, as it's ability to reduce bird's nests.

I haven't had any issues with the paint or chrome, but it's peeling/chipping off my Abu-Garcia reels. I suppose I could send them back under warranty, but they'd just send them back with new parts that were made the same way. Boy, what lousy customer service. :

And no, Wavespin was not a sponsor here. Doug Hannon was a contributor for some time here, and he designed the Wavespin. So that's probably how you heard about it.

Oh, and finally - The design really does make for longer casts, and greatly reduces the amount of birdsnests. At ICAST this year I saw a number of copy-cat designs from well-known companies for both fresh and salt water reels.  I guess that eliminates the "gimmick" aspect.

I respect Doug and didn't know he had anything to do with this reel. I guess companies never copy each others gimmicks when they sell, I ain't buying that one boss.The fishing world has been filled with gimmickry and that's one of the things driving sales like SEXY SHAD and RED HOOKS, nah they aren't gimmicks ;D

Glen is it true you have to keep the reel pretty full of line or it'll catch on the spool? Every body i talked to had this complaint about them reels back in 07'.This is the major reason i didn't touch these reels,I break off and retie way to much too keep a full spool of line.

I've had a Wavespin DH3000 for 2 years now but haven't fished it heavily.  The one thing that I did do was when they came out with the DHxl reel, I bought the handle from it and put it on the DH3000.  Feels much more comfortable to me.

Grimlin, I don't know what Glenn's thoughts are but i have had breakoffs with this reel and I did notice that once you've lost a few yards you lose casting distance.  Hannon actually personally responded to me on that issue and said that they were going to taper the "teeth" or at least redesign them to get away from that issue.  Have they?  I'm not sure.

Thanks for the reply  firefightn15.Some reason i deleted the post of the handle issue,but a few did say that handle was uncomfortable.I figured it was just a personal thing and not a flaw of the reel itself so i didn't really point it out.Good idea on switching that handle.May have to mention that to the guys who didn't like the handle.

The biggest argument from the posters i saw was the increased distant.They didn't say it was "false",they pretty much said it's not entirely true.Perhaps that's what they were pointing it out as.

I realize this was a while back and the reel was new on the market.So I'm sure they had to have fixed some of these complaints. For it to have copy-cats it can't be too bad of a reel.Just curious what some of the copy cats might have added into the feature of the reel itself.
