YeahSure Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Can anyone recommend a good type of line for my new spinning reel? I bought a shimano symetre 2500 and im fishing it on my shimano crucial 6'8" medium xfast. it says 6-12 lb line, im going to be fishing mainly shakey heads and worms and such on this rod. Im assuming my best bet would be some brand of fluorocarbon? Thanks for any help! Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 2, 2009 Super User Posted September 2, 2009 Roadwarrior is going to recommend Yo Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft 6 lbs test. I can recommend Yo Zuri Hybrid ( cuz apparently Cabela 's is the only danged vendor that has the Ultra Soft stuff ! > ) in 6-8lb test ( general purpose ) or P-Line CXX 6-8 Lbs test ( for tuff abrassive cover and/or bottom composition ), also, Trilene XT 6-8 lbs test . YeahSure Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 Yes I have seen numerous people on here say yo-zuri hybrid ultra soft is good.. is cabelas the only place to get it? My local bps or dicks wouldnt carry it? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 2, 2009 Super User Posted September 2, 2009 Fish307.com carries all Yo-Zuri products. Otherwise, Cabela's is the only other place I know of to buy Ultra Soft. 8-) Quote
YeahSure Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 Is there a huge difference between the ultra soft and the regular hybrid? Quote
Super User RoLo Posted September 2, 2009 Super User Posted September 2, 2009 For several decades I used "Trilene XL" and "Berkley Big Game" on all my spinning tackle (In saltwater I used Ande line). However, once I gave braided polyethylene a shot, that sounded the death-knell for all my monofilament lines. I probably have 20 to 30 bulk spools of mono, copolymer and fluoro. which are simply marking time in my tackle chest. Advantages of Braid Over Mono Near-Zero Memory <> Braided line is totally limp with full-blown amnesia. Birdnests with spinning gear are a thing of the past. Near-Zero Stretch <> Hooksets are a cinch even with large, dull hooks buried in soft-plastic (NEVER Texpose with braid) Thin Diameter Line <> Thin diameter line creates less water resistance, which provides more natural delivery and less line-drag. Superior Durability <> I only replace the line when it gets too far receded from the spool rim, long before any signs of wear. Abrasion-Resistance <> This is the only imperfection of braid, which is largely due to its inherently fine-diameter. Nonetheless, all premium braids are processed with a wear-resistant coating. In addition, the fine diameter of braid makes a good weed-wacker and salad shooter ;-) Roger Quote
Use ONLY Stren Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I got lucky, one of my local no-name tackle shops carries Yo-Zuri Hybrid US. ;D Quote
Jake... Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Is there a huge difference between the ultra soft and the regular hybrid? I would like to know this as well. what are the differences??? and why Advantages of Braid Over Mono Near-Zero Stretch <> Hooksets are a cinch even with large, dull hooks buried in soft-plastic (NEVER Texpose with braid) Roger i almost always texpose, curious as to why is this a problem?? I sometimes bury the tip after to make it weedless. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted September 3, 2009 Super User Posted September 3, 2009 i almost always texpose, curious as to why is this a problem?? A lot of ground was covered in that post, the least of which was T-rigging, Texposing & Texskinning. By all means, feel free to Texpose your soft-plastics with braided line, but the point made is that it's totally unnecessary. "Texposing" is intended for Boing-Boing lines such as nylon, fluorocarbon and combinations thereof, better known as copolymer. Braided polyethylene is in a class of its own. Roger Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted September 3, 2009 Super User Posted September 3, 2009 Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Hybrid Ultra Soft are both copolymers. The lines are a bonded, not coated, nylon/ fluorocarbon blend. Ultra Soft has a higher percentage of nylon in the formula which results in a line with less memory than any other copolymer I have used. The breaking strength of Ultra Soft is about 1 lb less than original Hybrid, e.g., #12 is about 18.5 vs 19.5. The other noticeable difference is original Hybrid blends better in water. In the smaller diameters, Hybrid is virtually invisible. In clear water, green is a perfect match; smoke in stained water. 8-) Quote
SammyLee Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I too, say go with the Yo-Zuri. I've used it for a week now on my Sahara 4000, 12# and it seems great. Good casting distance, knot tying is better than pure fulro and it's strong. I don't have the ultra-soft but the standard is a perfect compromise for me and my type fishing. PS They FINALLY seem to be truning back on. I got two last night after two weeks of skunk stink. Quote
