Very frustrating day

Well this morning I was tying baits on for fishing in the next couple of days, went to pull the line to tighten a knot on a recently tied hook and crack my brand new St. Croix Avid breaks.  >   It had only been on one trip and that was yesterday and preformed very well. I am very disappointed with the rod, considering it is my biggest rod purchase ever. All the pressure was on the line when it broke so I have no idea what went wrong. Any ideas??

Take or send it back with a note telling what when were it broke...

How did you tighten down the knot? Were you holding the rod near the tip when you did it?

I was just pulling the line above the knot to tighten it down. There was plenty of line out and the tip was under no pressure at all. And i was not holding the rod near the tip, there was no pressure on the rod at all. I really don't understand it.

One possible explaination could include that the rod sustained damage on the previous day's fishing trip, unnoticed by you, and then today with only the slightest force exerted on it, it was finished off (basically 3/4 of the way gone from the day before and then finished off the other 1/4 today). But rods don't just break when under no pressure at all. Something had to have happened somewhere, even if it wasn't your fault.

I once sat a battery in my boat and realized just as I sat it down that it was going to hit one of my rods. I yanked it back up and thought I had missed the rod in just enough time. I then picked up the rod and examined it and it looked just fine too so I thought I had gotten lucky. But I'm a perfectionist so I started "micro-examining" it. Sure enough there was the tell tale small crack in the upper 6" of the rod and when I flexed it just a bit........SNAP!!! Tip broke right off. Now that example wasn't exactly like yours cause I know when and how it happened. But if I hadn't paid much attention to it cause I thought it was alright at first, then I might have forgotten about the battery, and days later when it broke I would have thought it "just happened".

Could have been a flawed blank or somewhere between St. Croix and you buying it, it got scratch that was deep enough to weaken the blank.  Graphite is not forgiving when that happens.  Chalk it up to bad luck and get it replaced.

Yeah well I am frustrated, but hey things happen, rather have it break off now then when I am fighting the monster. Thanks for the info, going fishing tomorrow without the new setup. Still should be a good time regardless.

it probably happened at the store and then you got it and it finally broke. when I worked at gander Mountain my manager always put a zip tie through the front guide then hung them on a peg in the back room he used to put 15-20 rods on a peg this way and when people walked by they would bump into them and I have even seen people trying to dig through them while on the peg, pushing them around and twisting the whole bundle. a lot of stress on the tips of those rods. none ever broke but I always wondered.
