how to set up my shimano citica

I decided to make a new thread since the other was cluttered and I had some new questions. I decided to go with the shimano citica, and am going to purchase it today. I have a Shakespeare Intrepid rod that came with my Shakespeare Intrepid reel that I bought like 5 years ago.

My questions are:

1. What type of line (brand) should I have put on the Citica? And what lb test? I fish for bass, trout and panfish occasionally. Doesn't mean I never will go catfishing or anything though, but thats rare

2. Should I use the Shakespeare rod I already have, or buy another rod? I don't want to put TOO much money in since the reel is already $120

3. Is it fine to buy the Citica at Dick's? Or should I get it offline?

ok first of all the citca is a bait casting reel and the intrepid is a spinnig rod... so you'll have to buy a new rod if you want to fish that reel. you can get some deascent Bait casting rods at wal-mart... i sugest the Ugly stick lite pro... 36$ but you'll want to upgrade the rod later when you have the money... if you want to use that rod you'll have to buy a new spinnig reel... if your going to be fishing really light lures i don't know if you want to use a baitcaster

I learned to use a bait caster with a Shakespeare Xterra that was used when i got it... then i worked my way up to the gear i have now... no one says you gotta have high end gear to start with but it's nice if you can afford it... Makes it easier and less frustrating....

what is considered "light" though? Recently I've been using wacky rigged weightless senkos, t-rigged soft plastics, spinners and buzzbaits

Light tackle to me is 1/4oz or lighter.... Senkos, t rigged plastics, Spinner baits, and buzz baits are all fine... but when i think of trout or panfish i think of small 1/16oz inline spinners, tiny cranks and poppers... stuff like that....

Let your waters dictate the line strength. Your Citica is more than capable of handling just about any line you put on it between 8-20# test.  10-14# would be a good all around line barring heavy cover. For example, in one lake, I can get away with fishing 6# line so I use it.

Unfortunately, if you are referring to your spinning rod, it will NOT work well with your Citica.  You will need to get a casting rod.  Fortunately, you can find fair and bass worthy rods in the $30-40 range. The Shimano Convergence, the Lightning Rod Amps are decent enough. I would lean toward the convergence rods. They are back with a very good warranty and will serve you well.

3. Is it fine to buy the Citica at Dick's? Or should I get it offline?

If you are buying from a retailer, then it isn't going to really matter from whom you buy it. Barring a sale, which is rare for Shimano items, you are very likely to find the price the same whereever you look or very close.  This does not apply to Ebay.  I prefer to make such purchases in person so that I can inspect the reel completely.  Even in the store, you might find a slight differences in how reels retrieve, in the same model.

Congrats. You will not be disappointed.  You might want to have 4 of your centrifugal brakes in the "on" position and the other two "off."

I'm more of a bass fisherman, trout is every once in a while. If I do fish trout I typically use a spoon or rooster tail but I like spoons more

Yes, but only if you dig up a $20 off $100 coupon first to make the price more palatable (they are everywhere).  The Citica can be found online for $95-100 (haven't seen it under $90 but I'm sure if you were diligent like Sweet Daddy you could find one).

Best reel under $150?  No.  Favorite reel of many in that range?  Sure.

Yes, it is an excellent reel in that price range, but there are other great reels in that range as well. The Citica should definitely be on everyone's short list of reels in that range.

Back to your lb question. I'm running 12 lb and it casts beautifully and holds strong. I would get a medium rod fast.

This should be perfect so long as your not planning on tossing it into the lilly pads.

If you are planning on lilies I would put on braided line and get a MH rod.

Good luck its a nice reel Check out bass pro shops they have a citica with a new casting rod combo for about 180 I believe.
