ottawa Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Of course the Mg50 is lighter but as far as a quality built reel isn't the Calais one of the smoothest and best reel Shimano has ever built? Also sells for $299 vs $379 or thereabouts. I have neither reel but looking at buying another outfit. So what would you buy? Quote
ottawa Posted August 13, 2009 Author Posted August 13, 2009 The Calais DC is not comparable. I stand corrected. The Shimano Calais 100A is $399 not $299 Still which is better, newer Mg50 or Calais for another $20-30.00 Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 13, 2009 Super User Posted August 13, 2009 The Calais is a $400 reel. Quote
The_Natural Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 The Calais is archaic. It is smooth, but it's a brick and I hate the Johnny Morris mirror finish. It is long overdue for a redesign. There are several reels I'd take over the Calais. Quote
steezy Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Hummm... Calais 9 oz vs Core 50 5.5 oz, 40% lighter, new lower profile design. Comparing apples to oranges. I fish with a Core 50 and Core 100 almost everyday and I will even prefer the core 50 over the 100 everytime (probably going to replace the core 100 with another 50 soon). Ive tried/fished a Calais and the Core 50 blows it away. Dont take my word for it, get your hands on both reels and using the same rod, try them and I can almost guarantee you will pick the core 50. I only paid $325 for a new core 50 a couple of days ago on ebay and got a great deal on new GLX for it. Quote
vatech Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Gonna go with the group here and say the Core 50. Holding that thing in your hand for the first time is shocking! Quote
Super User flechero Posted August 13, 2009 Super User Posted August 13, 2009 You can buy a lot of lead tape for $80. : Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 13, 2009 Super User Posted August 13, 2009 I used to own a Calais 100A ( sold it get me a TDZ ), a friend of mine has two Calais 200. Weight aside: Calais ---> no HEG; Core 50 Mg ---> HEG Calais ---> don 't let the bearing count get you, 4 of those 10 bearings are in the knobs. Calais 200 ---> not the newest technology there, the reel has remained the same since it was launched to the marke, doesn 't stop it from being a great reel. Calais 100 ---> more modern reel but still no HEG. Quote
Bantam1 Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 The Calais 100A has HEG, its just not as large of gearing as the Core. It actually uses the same main gear as the CTE 100. Quote
SJB1226 Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 make the choice easier and end up with a much better reel..... Go on Ebay and find you a nice TD-Z 103 or 105 and have the best reel ever made hands down. Quote

Good...But you are encouraged to start another thread. We have several members that will contribute, the TD-Z reels are highly regarded by some of our most knowledgeable guys. Back on topic, I have both the Calais 200 and CH50MG. The Calais is a tank and I REALLY like it for several applications: Mattlures Baby Bass, 3/4 oz Ledgebuster Single Willow Blade Spinnerbaits and Rage Tail Anaconda to name a few. The CH50MG is simply a marvelous reel and the better choice for most techniques, especially if your goal is to minimize weight. Mine is saddled to a Dobyns 803C split grip. 8-) Quote

The other day, you offered to send a beggar some stuff, in spite of admonishing him not to ask again. Hardly befitting a "warrior". ;D Quote
