scaledriver Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I am trying to set myself up a descent flipping rig on a sort of budget. I am looking in the 100-150 dollar range. I have been lookin at the carrot stick, All star Big boy, and St Croix Mojo Bass. the local BPS only has the Carrot stick in stock. How are do the other 2 compare? Is there anyhting else I should look at in that price range? Quote

scaledriver Posted August 5, 2009 Author Posted August 5, 2009 I was hoping that I would be able to do both with what finally descided on. I flip better than I pitch though ( I am learning to pitch still) Quote
Koop Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 IMO I would not go with the Mojo bass because they tend to lack sensitivity that is a necessity in a good flipping stick. I would not go with a carrot stick either due to personal reasons. I have never handled an All Star. I would recommend a Powell MAX Flipping Rod 7'6" Mag-Hvy 766 it runs about $170 but you can find it cheaper about 140-150 (and *** will honor that lower price) or look for a used one. Powell has a life time warranty and makes an amazing rod, great sensitivity and IMO this is one of the best flipping sticks on the market. Now I personally like a slightly shorter rod for pitching than flipping, thats a personal preference though and I know people who do both with the same rod. I do a lot more pitching than flipping so I went with a 7'1 rod (Kistler Argon Pitch N' Flip) that runs about $200 but if you can wait a bit to afford it, that is without a doubt one of the nicest rods I have ever fished. Your other option is the Crucial Flipping Cast Rod 7'6" Heavy, I have heard amazing things about this rod, but have never personally handled one. It will run about $180. Out of all of these I would recommend the Powell due to your price range vs a quality stand point. Hope this helps somewhat. Quote

TheHammer84 Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 You could also look at a Daiwa Light and Tough 7'6" flipping stick, I think they're about $130. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I would recommend the Powell 766H personally! Also, Ebay has some Crucials right now! Quote
Willzx225 Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I have two of the crucials and love them! I would highly recommend them Quote
Incheon Basser Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 If you want a good all around flipping and pitching stick any 7'6" MH with xfast tip will work nicely.. the xfast action gives you the right amount of stiffness and backbone to flip with & the control to pitch accurately Quote

Check out my review on the MH ... i think it's on the 2nd page or so Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 5, 2009 Super User Posted August 5, 2009 You can flip or pitch with any rod...the cover dictates rod power. When I'm fishing heavy cover, I prefer a long rod, heavy or x-heavy power, and a moderate to moderate-fast bend. A fast tip is nice for long pitch casts, but most are too soft for hoisting bass out of cover. Quote

Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted August 5, 2009 Super User Posted August 5, 2009 As far as I can tell Castaway makes a descent flipping stick. I have the Big Show Flipping Stick that I got from TW for $99. It is a 7'6''H with Mod-Fast tip for fishing braid. Really nice rod for a great price, haven't had many experiences with it but what I have has been good, work has been a little unforgiving this year Quote
