Dude, that's brutal.  I've been trying a shorter flippin stick, and so far I think I like it.  Falcon Cara Amistad--7'3".  It's still pretty fast at the tip, but when it loads up it's a hoss.

I'm ordering a 7'4" Steez rod for my flippin' duties; weight is a big concern for me and has prevented me from fishing my flippin' stick in the past.  However, the Loomis BCFR 894 is a better rod.....I fished with one for a couple of outings and it blew me away. It felt lighter than my 854 or 864 for some reason. I can get a deal on the Steez though, hence the reason for my choice. The Steez will be sensitive enough, and will serve my needs well. Loomis makes the best graphite IMHO, but the perfect blank for its intended purpose isn't a guarantee.  My 6'3" Steez rod is the best jerkbait rod I have ever fished with.  Out of the Loomis' blanks however, the CBR 845 and BCFR 894 are just perfect blanks for their intended purpose.  There is no way to improve.

Its really just a heavy cover rod I'm looking for.  I pitch big jigs, pegged punching plastics, and wing frogs with it.  I like it to be a H or XH power, and moderate action.  Light is a plus, and so is sub $200.  Don't bother with the orange veggie rod recommendations, as I handled it, and it was too wimpy for me.  Looking at Powell 766H or or Kistler MGADFPSH78T.  I do like full rear grip of the Dobyns 805FLIP/PUNCH, and I've fished some of the newer Dobyns stuff.

you could test run a Helium 2 LTX for the forum.......lol. i read they handle well with a pixy mounted on them.

I think Id just be setting the hook a little easier... unless your rod was pre-weakened by some other event.  I never use anything extra for flipping but I recently got a Kistler Magnesium that works very well.

That's what I use for flipping/pitching and frogs. They have fairly soft tips so they can launch frogs very well. They also have lots of backbone. I have been using it in some very dense stuff on the Potomac and it has more than enough strength to horse fish out of thick stuff. FWIW, I usually have really intense hooksets as well.

Its not really that I "flip," its that I fish heavy cover. So called "flipping sticks" are the heaviest rods most manus offer. There was a small nick in the blank, just below the tip, but the rod snapped in half. Its no sweat, thiat rod didn't owe me a penny. Many 5 and 6+ fish hauled out of the slop and timber, and I'm not changing my style. It isn't so much the hookset as it is the wind and lift directly after, to raise the fish from the cover that puts all the stress on the blank.  Breaking rods just comes with the territory.  That's why I'm looking for a truly tough and somewhat economical rod.

Actually, this is useful information. I'm not sure the soft tip would suit my style at all. I prefer moderate to mod-fast rod with a steady bend across the blank. Yes, the flexible tip throws frogs better, but I feel it inhibits landing the fish.

So, even though what you say isn't good news to me, its very useful - thanks. Rod preference is very subjective, and what we all use isn't always going to line up exactly. Thanks again, Dan., I appreciate the details.

No problem, glad I could be useful. I really hate how much variety there is in tip speeds between brands. On the one hand it allows people to get a rod that they really like but on the other hand it makes buying rods without handling them very difficult.

Falcon Cara Peacock 6-9.....I'm not kidding. May seem unorthodox but I use mine for 1oz+ spinnerbaits, frogs, and some swimbaits--it's a beast, and lighter in the hands than you would expect-pretty well-balanced.

That is an unorthodox suggestion, probably plenty strong enough. But I'm looking at longer, not shorter. Might get an 8 footer.
