still learning Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I fish thick lily pads. My baitcaster is spooled with 20# braid which so far gets the fish out a majority of the time. The problem is that braid destroys the action of the bait because it floats. In the wind, forget it, the braid is like a sail. I used to use a heavier mono, but lost way too many in the thick. Would a fluorocarbon work better, or is there a braid that doesn't float so much? thanks for your help. Quote
TheHammer84 Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Maybe try 65# braid....or 25# fluoro, has less stretch than mono and sinks. Quote
SoFl-native Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 braid is tops for heavy weeds. FC is good but it doesnt saw through weeds like braid. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 i flip heavy pads with 65# braid with no issues whatsoever! Even with only an 1/8oz weight sometimes and 20MPH winds! Quote
JellyMan Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I use 30lb Power Pro braid for weeds and cover. I would go heavier tho. 40lb and up just for extra security. Quote
CmacFL Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I need a baitcaster to flip heavy weeds lol. You know this I don't have a rod and reel to use heavy duty line yet. You will do O.K. on jigs. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 28, 2009 Super User Posted July 28, 2009 This is Lacassine Wildlife Refuge it's a shallow marsh located in Southwest Louisiana; it holds bass up to 12 lbs. Line of choice Berkley Big Game 15# Mean Green, what you will have to do on occasion is go get em. Most of the time I can play a bass through the pads but if I get wrapped I simply flip the trolling motor on high. I have exited the boat on occasion Quote

sweet daddy Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I would be more inclined to punch through the pads, and for that I would use 50 to 65# power pro. For the frog setup I would use the highest pound test mono you can get away with. Quote
