I bought a Zebco 20/20 reel and rod combo at a garage sale yesterday for $5. I've never had one of these but own a few 33's that have a lever to select Anti-Reverse On & Off. This 20/20 doesn't have that and line just spools off. Was it designed this way or do I need to dig into it? If it has no anti-reverse, I'll put a 33 on it and call it another panfish rig for the grandson.

This is my easy method for servicing spincast reels.

1.) Throw zebcos in the trash

2.) Buy yourself one good spinning outfit and one good baitcast outfit

3.) Enjoy fishing

;D ;D ;D

In all seriousness though; are you sure it's not a zebco 202? Maybe the anti reverse konking out is why you got it so cheaply.

It is probably the  Zebco ProStaff 20/20 Spincast

Ball-bearing drive for smooth performance, Positive Pickup design, silent anti-reverse, rugged Magnum Gears, star-actuated fade-free Magnum Drag, power handle, and stainless steel front cover.

Pre-spooled w/premium line....

Don't know what you paid but the MSRP for 09 is $15.95..

It is what I have called a throw away.. :)

Tight Lines!!!

I remember the old saying "There's one in every crowd" referring to wise-cracks. You guys proved that there might be multiples.  :)

Hey. It was $5 and there's a monkey on my back. As if there aren't monkeys in Oklahoma? And, no, it's a 20/20.

Reel Mech - you are the one I had most hoped would reply. It is indeed the ProStaff model with gold-plated bearings and titanium drag star.

In all seriousness, guys.. I know about quality BCs and Spinners but have no problems with Zebco cheapos. I grew up with them. My question remains unanswered.

Ok here is your answer.

No it wasn't designed that way. Not sure what a silent anti-reverse is. Yes you will have to dig into it.

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

I only meant it as a good natured joke. Sorry if I offended you.  :'(

Thx Reel Mech and Matt. No offense taken.

I took it apart this afternoon and all is good. Maybe it just sat in a garage too long. Fish as you were. :)

I don't think you can turn the anti-reverse off on those.  Do you have a lure or weight tied on when the line is spooling off?  If not, the line is not being pulled down against the pick-up pin.  Did you check to see if the pick-up pin is even engaging?  Just unscrew the cone & check.  If not, just lube it.

Zebco service is first rate.  They usually won't charge you, and more often than not, send you a new reel.  They also send out just about any part gratis.

Most Zebco reels were built to be disposable - they know it, but their service is over the top to promote customer loyalty.

My buddy fishes a Zebco Bullet inshore on a Lami MTC casting rod and loves it - bought it for his wife, but she prefers their XUL rockfish spinning rod now.

I have a 20/10 and have had 20/20 reels.  It should be a simple fix for the AR and there should be parts available.
