Is there any place on the reel that shows the gear ratio besides on the retrieve section? I recently purchased a 6.4.1 and and received it today. The gear ratio is "scratched" off for the most part but it looks a hell of a lot like that 2nd # is a 1 making it a 7.1:1. The # on the bottom of the seat is 16 00 18/10 AK

It's only on the piece under the drag star.

So I contacted the seller and he stated that the reel was a 6.4:1 but the handle was from a 7.1:1... nothing in the sale ad about a refurb or reconstruct or anything  >;) .  This is why I use ebay so rarely.  He even had like 1500 stars with a 99.9% rating... what a joke.

yeah, ask him to refund your money or send you a legit one. Or just leave negative feedback and tell eBay

Did you pay new retail price?  Is the reel working as expected from a new reel?  How is the handle different from what you expected and how does it change the reel performance?  Buying it unseen... buyer beware (and lower your expectations to a real-world level).

Did you pay new retail price?  : No, About $10 under.

Is the reel working as expected from a new reel?  : Yes

How is the handle different from what you expected and how does it change the reel performance?  : Handle is different because the reel is supposed to be a 6.4:1 handle states 7.1:1 on it

Buying it unseen... buyer beware (and lower your expectations to a real-world level):

This was advertised as a used reel with minor surface wear in a 6.4:1 gear ratio.

I received a cosmetically good reel, the handle states 7.1:1 this makes me beleive 1 of 2 things originally.

1) This is a 7.1:1 which I did not order.

2) This is a remanufactured or refurbished reel thus likely voiding any warranty with the manufacturer.

When I contacted the seller he told me "the handle is from a different reel"

Pretty sure a real world honest seller with good intentions not set to scam someone would not misconstrue any of this information and PUBLISH that it was a reconstructed reel.

The handles are the same, correct? Then it could very well work exactly the same as a reel with it's own original handle.

I do beleive they are the same, and this is one reason I debated just keeping it. Then I started wondering what other parts might have been reconstructed on the reel.  Then I started doing some tests, when I took the next step and measured the retrieve it retreived approx 31" in 1 revolution showing that it was in fact a 7.1:1 which makes me wonder about the sellers intentions.

A seller, per Ebay's rules should always describe the item he/she is selling 100%! If misleading a buyer about what you are selling is okay to you than i would not want to do any kind of business with you either!

The 2nd number could be a "4" that has been scratched enough to look like a 1.

If you paid by paypal you can dispute the sale as "item not as described"

Thought of that as well cart, tried to give every possibility there was as I wanted the reel... but upon further investigation he actually stated that it was a handle from a 7.1:1 on a 6.4:1 reel.

I'll be sending it back for a refund and leaving neutral feedback if the return process goes as expected.

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

Nope, it's not OK... I don't shop Ebay, only brick & morter where I can see the product and the seller!   For those that do, don't cry if you get scammed.

Why not? There are perfectly legitimate expectations about buying online. If you take the right precautions and use common sense, you have nothing to worry about.

I know someone who was permabanned from Ebay for doing stuff like that. I would ask for a refund (if that's what you want), if he/she doesn't allow refunds (because a lot of people won't)...just explain that there is nothing wrong with the reel, it's just not the one you wanted. Someone who was looking for a 7.1:1 would probably love it, it's just not what you want. If they still don't cooperate negative feedback, report them to ebay admin.

I have bought and sold a lot of stuff on ebay over the years with good experience...however I wouldn't pay more than 80% of retail for something "like new". If it's not brand new in the box, it's worth spending the extra $10 and getting it from the store.
