Braid info...

I've been using braid for about a month now on both of my casting set-ups.  I've tried a couple different leaders and ways of spooling and I would just like to know if what I have settled on is proper.  I'm using spiderwire code red 20lb test.  For the backing I'm using about 30 yeards of some 8lb mono and for the leader I'm using 3-4 yards of 12lb flouro.  What I would really like to know is will the inconsistencies in diameter affect performance or does it not really matter?  Also is there anything at all that I should be doing differently?  

Btw both of my set ups have said line, leaders and backings, and they are a mojo bass crankbait and a mojo bass jig and worm each paired with abu garcia black max reels.

Most of my light rigs are set up with 12# or 14# mono backing ( it makes no difference what size it is since it only takes up space ), 30# superline, and if I use a leader, I use about 4' of 20# fluorocarbon. I have no issues with diameter differences. I use the uni-uni knot connection with 6 turns on both lines with the tag ends completely cut  off (no knot slip or failures). I've been rigging this way since Spiderwire was first introduced.

It shouldn't...the backing is just to take up space so it shouldn't really matter, you should hope you don't get down to that while fishing.

As for the leader, I use 40# braid with a 20# fluoro leader, and inconsistency hasn't been a problem.  I too use the uni to uni knot but use about 5 turns on both lines.

If that is your worry, you don't really have one.  The line diameters are irrelevant.  

However, you might need to make an adjustment to your hook set for your crankbait set up.  Braid's near zero stretch can cause an angler first dealing with braid's near zero stretch to really learn what near zero stretch really means.

Ensure that your trebles are ultra sharp such that the fish impale themselves on the trebles. You do not need to really "set the hook".

The fish bite and run off with the crankbait and the make the braid get taut as the swim off. Perhaps next is a little flick of the wrist from you and a move back to add a little more tension on the line and it's a done deal.

thanks for the info guys.  as far as the hook set goes ive never really used a very aggressive hook set with cranks anyhow.  I keep my hooks sharp and i find that when i reeling and a fish hits one of those six hooks are gunna set themselves.  i usually just use a slow pull set off to the side to ensure that the fish is on.  I save my really hard sets for jigs and wacky rigs and what not.

Looks like you got it right. I only wrote that because I learned the hard way when I first used braid.

Imagine watching a big bass flare its mouth open and you see your crankbait reverse direction from floating up (paused) to moving into the bass's mouth.  Right when it started closing its mouth I pulled back and wound up pulling the bait out of its mouth before the mouth could close.  We stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity as the crankbait zipped past my ear before she nonchalantly swam back under the dock.    I found out what zero stretch really means.  ;D

i know what you mean.  as soon as i upgraded my line i quickly realized how much stretch actually affects sensitivity and how much stretch there really is.

I use 50, and 65 lb power pro. I have never used tape, mono backing, or a leader. I tried the spiderwire a long time ago and it sucked, I trash talked braid for years until I tried power pro. I get a little cranky when it comes time to re spool because of the price, but just like using fluorocarbon the quality, and numbers of fish outweigh the cost. Good luck, and go easy on the hook set.
