okiefisher8 Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Sorry guys I do not know if I should be posting this in this section, but I am going Striper fishing in a few weeks, Ive been twice before but with a guide, were going without one to beaverlake this time to try out the new boat. My question is what would you guys suggest to use? What action rod? gear ratio reel? #test. Thanks, Okie Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 For Strippers I like a small stage with a pole OH OH, misunderstood the question my mistake Quote

Super User Micro Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 If you are going after stripers of any size, then it's hard to beat an Ugly Stick Tiger Lite. You can buy more expensive, you can buy a cooler name brand, but you cannot get a better striper stick. This is one type of fishing where Ugly Sticks really excel. These rods do really well casting big-arse plugs and heavy treble hook baits. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 Casting or spinning ? Ugly stick is a good choice I see a lot of guys using a 15-30 standard ugly stick for larger fish, I'm buying one myself for a larger spinning reel. I use a shimano sojourn 10-25 lb and it has great back bone too, cheap 29.95. You don't need sensitivity, you''re gonna get slammed. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted July 19, 2009 Super User Posted July 19, 2009 You can't beat the Zillion swimbait stick paired with a Zillion reel. Light enough to cast all day and enough backbone to control a chunky fish. Quote
sweet daddy Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 It depends on how you fish. If you're going for the top water bite I would recommend a 7ft m or mh rod with a 6.2:1 reel. If you're live bait, umbrella rigging or trolling I would go with a big round reel with a heavy rod. Good luck. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 19, 2009 Super User Posted July 19, 2009 My rig is a G. Loomis MBR844C/ Shimano CTE200GT/ Yo-Zuri Hybrid #15. The majority of the striper we catch below the Pickwick Dam are 8-12 lbs. However, we occasionally find a 20+ and this year, several 30+. My rig is not too heavy, but not too light for any fresh water fish and light saltwater fishing. 8-) Quote
okiefisher8 Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 If possible I think I'm going to get a H action falcon, probably bucoo so I can use it as a flipp and pitching rod to. The only reason I'm doing this is because I can get them really cheap. for the reel, would you go with a lower gear ratio, for flipping and pitching/striper? what other applications are H action rods geared towards?
