DRhodes Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Hey guys, I have always been a pflueger fan untill I found today they are made in China Do any of you know where all the brands are made? I searched google unsuccessfully Pflueger - China Shimano - Japan Abu - Sweaden ?? Quantum - ? Mitchell - ? Wright & McGill - ? Thanks for the input D Quote
Elite Image Fishing Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Ardent reels are made in the good ole USA and even sponsor the Army Bass Angler Team, which is a great group of guys. But yes Ardent are made here in the states. Decently priced I might add. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 Most are made in China now, even Penns. Â Shimano has some made in Malyasia, not for the Japanese market. I have an Avet.....made in the USA. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 Accurate is made in USA also vaan Staal Quote

Thanks for the input D Fixed it for ya. The Pfluegers I own, Supremes, Summits and Patriarchs are made in Korea, as are the Garcia's. It's possible some of their cheaper reels are made in China but if you're going to buy cheap equipment, you'll be hard pressed to find anything American made. Quote

I have two Presidents  - I dont really classify them as a "Cheap" reel, both of them I bought about 5 years ago and on the box is says "Made in China" Thanks for letting me know about Abu and the other Pfluegers I had no idea that abu went to korea, I have the older Abus and they say "Made in Sweden" hard to believe they let the company go to korea, its sad, very sad Quote

Dumping what I have will accomplish nothing, but a couple months ago, when my uncle lost his job due to a plant shipping overseas I vowed to buy American products if at all possible, I have done so with the bigger products - trading in my Honda for a Ford. Trading my wifes Toyota for a Ford. Now I'm working on my fishing equipment. I dont mind buying something from Sweden or Finland. I just dont want anything from China or Japan, or Korea. Again, I know its a frutile effort, but I have extra cash laying around, and if I sell all of my current rods and reels I can buy alot of American Made products, and it will give us and the guys "something to talk about" on the fishing outings, comparing American quality to the cheaper China stuff. I'm sure a St Croix rod is going to outpreform a cheap berkley any day of the week. Sorry for such a long post. Quote

I'm sure a St Croix rod is going to outpreform a cheap berkley any day of the week. Sorry for such a long post. Not long compared to the filibusters I write. In March of 07, I took delivery of a GMC New Sierra. Â My pickups since 73 have all been GM products. My "New Sierra" was built in Mexico. I know some blame the trade agreements for the job losses. Â To do that is to ignore history. Â Long before those trade agreements were thought of, we lost the electronics industry, the furniture industry, the textile industry, the footware industry, and others. In the 1930s, before I was born, my maternal grandfather lost his position in a Fall River, MA textile mill when the mills in the Northeast were outsourcing their labor to the South. He was offered the opportunity to run the plant in Georgia. Â He agreed to get it up and running, but was on in years, and opted to remain with his many children in this area, once it was. I say this not as a political discussion, but to point out that businesses will go wherever they have to in order to compete and survive. The difference between then and now is that it is easier today for a company to move its operations offshore than it was for those textile mills from the Northeast to move their operations a few hundred or a thousand miles to the South. To the folks employed by those mills, it made no difference to them whether the mills moved to the South, or South Korea. Â The result was the same. Â Financial devestation to Fall River, New Bedford, Haverhill, Lowell, Lawrence, etc. None of these cities have ever rebounded from that loss. The same for Brockton and their footwear industry. Life has never been the same in those communities. Â And though I don't like the idea of it, it will never be the same in the good ol' U.S. of A. Â No matter what any politician may promise. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 Honda, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes have plants here and employ American workers. Â I know profits go overseas, but the Ford or Gm you buy employ oversea workers with profits coming here. Â Buying American does not mean more Americans working, did I here recently that GM wants to start employing Russian workers. Buy what you want, a good chance your uncle lost his job due to the poor economy. Â Other countries have layoffs too now. Quote

We are in a global economy, there is no turning back now, Once we had electricity, the candle makers had to figure out what they were gonna do.Each country and hemisphere will align what the products and services they can provide best and we will trade with each other, and each country will then have to train it's work force to fit those needs As for comparing a St.Croix to a cheap Berkley, I don't know about that one. How about comparing a StCroix to a Steetz, Fenwick Elite or a Upper end She man O; thats more like it I can compare a Caddy to a Yugo , and come out right also ;D Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 Don't go kidding yourself that every part of those 2 new Fords you bought was made in America. Assembled in America, yea. Made America, no. You better start selling you computer, furniture, t.v., appliances, shoes, wifes diamond ring and many other things. Â Buy and use what's good for YOU, even if it is made overseas. Super User Micro Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 Does it really matter where equipment is made? If the parent company outsources manufacture to different countries, and keeps quality control tight, any country can produce fantastic products. Abu produces reels in Sweden, Korea and China. The reels I've seen that come out of China are as good as any. Frankly, the reels that come out of Sweden that I've seen have looser tolerances than the reels I've seen from Korea and China. Japan doesn't have a lock on quality control, either. With a young population that doesn't want to work as hard as their parents, and with countries like China and Korea wanting to take the top spots in manufacture, you're going to continue to see better and better products come out of Korea and China that are as good or better than Japanese products. And given that wages American workers demand, the effects of Unions, higher taxes on businesses, the immense burdens the new administration wants to place on companies to provide health care, I think the zenith of American manufacture is over. And it's all good. Â There is no way I would give business to an American manufacturer that produces crap solely becasue the product sports a "Made in the USA" sticker. Â If a Chinese or Korean company turns out a quality product to suit my needs, they get my dollars. Â Quote

Super User bilgerat Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 Even Germany, which was known for years as a producer of high quality precision goods, outsources. Quote
The Yankee Fist Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Good for you supporting your country. I applaud you for not just realizing it's a "global store". If all of us did that maybe demand would increase domestically and manufacturing would flourish again. If you take the time there are MANY American products you can still buy inexpensively that we all need...socks, t shirts, jeans, boots...all kinds of stuff that everyone can use and guess what? Yeah, they last LONGER than the other crap. Examples this year for me: Red Wing boots...my aunt retired from there in 1981...I still buy them and may only go through 5 pairs in a lifetime. Lucky Brand and Levi's US jeans...the material is SO much better and so is the fit. Underarmour socks> 20.00 for 4 pairs, probably last you YEARS. I bought Loomis rods....the GLX has guides made in my state no less than 20 minutes away. Right now, I am wearing a made in the USA T shirt I bought for 8.00 that says "American to the core." Eagle claw hooks, USA for the most part. Lures made in the USA. Guns...Colt, why, in my state. Nice new M4 and M1911 WWI repro. I could go on but the point is, even the most financially strapped family or individual can still get the necessities American made....fruit and veggies from your local farmer maybe? Get off the cells while you shop and pay attention. I'm really partial to Shimano reels because my now deceased stepdad took me to my first fishing show and bought me a Shimano in the very early 80's and it's still going and well, Japan has been pretty fair in their trade dealings with us for the most part and let's face it, Shimano's reels are damned good and just fantastic if they are Japanese made. The reasons I don't care for the Chinese products is their government's unfair trade/labor practices and the bulk of the crap is junk and being rammed down our throats cheaply while US made products are made WAY more expensive for the Chinese to purchase. I hate this we all have to get used to being "global" ****. I won't. My wife just lost her job of 18 years to India thanks to corporate greed. I'll pick and choose carefully when buying thank you. Super User Raul Posted July 18, 2009 Super User Posted July 18, 2009 Not all Shimanos are made in Japan ----> Malaysia Not all Daiwas are made in Japan ----> China, Thailand. Not all Abus are made in Sweden ----> Korea, China Just because it 's not made where you think or wish it was made means that the product is made poorly, cheaply or with bad quality. The company determines which quality standards should be applied for the product and provide the parts. If the companie 's quality standards are low, if the parts provided are of poor quality the product will be bad quality no matter where it was made. Quote
Pantera61 Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 This "Buy American" BS, is nothing more than union propaganda to subsidize higher wages. Â But that's only half the story, the other half is Corporate interests. Â Weak dollar, illegal immigrant workforce and high tariffs to retain a captive market. Do you think union members or corporate fat cats feel your pain as they drain your wallet? Â The best product gets my buck, baby. Â Whether it's made in Aruba or Zimbabawe or any country in between. The Yankee Fist Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I own my own business thank you and buy American because I WANT TO not because of some dictum written by an idiot politician. What do you think of how those people are treated while they make your cheap stuff? Cut a finger off and back to work when it's patched, yep. I have a friend who owns factories in China and he runs a tight ship and has seen MANY unpleasant things in other factories there. Did you think of that or just your precious wallet and screw the 8 year old that got whipped for screwing a screw in wrong on your POS reel? My buck my butt. Pantera61 Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I don't buy Chinese products unless I absolutely have to. Â Perhaps I should have used an asterisk. Everything you do is the result of something done by some idiot politician. Â Whether to choose to believe it, well that's about up to you. Quote
