catchbig0bass Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Advantages to switching... From powerpro to fireline braid. Im looking at the new high vis / low vis fireline. Looking primarily for less dig in factor which was already suggested but has anyone noticed smoother or longer casts? Quote
Ridgerunner7 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I'm no expert, but I have used both extensively. I prefer the Fireline braid. Seems smooter and I was casting a country mile with it. PP is ok, but seems rougher and fades too quickly. My Fireline hasn't faded. I actually prefer Fireline, Suffix, then PP. Just my opinion Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 15, 2009 Super User Posted July 15, 2009 I've had a love affair with PowerPro braid that lasted a couple of years. Then I purchased a bulk spool of 30-lb test that experienced unfounded breakage. This past spring, my wife and I were both breaking-off all our largest bass on that same line. Subsequently, I found on the net where PowerPro themselves admitted to having quality control issues. PowerPro is replacing those bad spools free of charge, but after embarrassing themselves and me in the process, they couldn't pay me to use their line again. My new crush is Berkley Fireline Tracer braid...go for it 8-) Roger Quote
catchbig0bass Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 did you notice any difference in casting wise with the fireline from the powerpro? Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted July 15, 2009 Super User Posted July 15, 2009 not used the new fireline but have fished both PP and suffix and prefer the suffix. I didn't like the fact that the caoting on the PP rubbed off so easily and it was too flat. The suffix braid is lighter in color but is superior and cast better as well. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 15, 2009 Super User Posted July 15, 2009 did you notice any difference in casting wise with the fireline from the powerpro? It "seems" as though Fireline casts farther than PowerPro, but that may be illusory (what I want to believe). Although Fireline braid is a tad stiffer than PowerPro (more strands), it's not as stiff as Sufix which I also tried. Roger Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 FireLine is a lot rounder, therefore it is limper and casts further than PP! Also, it makes a lot less noise coming through the guides. It fades less/slower than PP and it is way stronger too. Oh yeah, thinner diameter for the same lb test as well. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 15, 2009 Super User Posted July 15, 2009 I agree with the Fireline Braid over the PP. I use the Tracer so I can see it. It will lose some of it's stiffness with use. The diameter of the Fireline Braid is the same as the PP and Suffix in comparable pound tests. Quote

catchbig0bass Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 I def will. I am hoping a local shop around here has it in stock. I have my eyes on the tracer braid big time for the fact of visability of the line. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 16, 2009 Super User Posted July 16, 2009 Power pro is far superior to fireline. It's smoother, casts further, tangles less, and stays strong longer. It doesn't chafe and it really casts wonderfully. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 17, 2009 Super User Posted July 17, 2009 RE: The "which is better" question. Consider this. If only one company made line, it would be the best..............and the worst. We all have our preferences, but the competition for our money has accounted for any and all improvements in all tackle and gear over the years. Because Power Pro is in the line business, they are partly responsible for developments at all the other manufacturers. The same can be said for everyone of them. The best is only the best until the next "best thing" comes along. Brand loyalty is fine, but keep in mind, that line you feel is the best is only that good because competition from other manufacturers forced "your company" to improve their product. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted July 17, 2009 Super User Posted July 17, 2009 Fireline has 8 strands maybe thats my call, since PP was so evil to me Quote
steve328 Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I've used Powerpro, Suffix and the Fireline and my new favorite is Fireline Tracer Braid. Casts smoother, less wind knots and great visibility. My next line purchase will be Tracer braid and I'll be glad when I evenually switch all my reels over to it. Quote
catchbig0bass Posted July 17, 2009 Author Posted July 17, 2009 Ya I useto love the PP and definatly am a fan of braid over mono yet im getting digging on my pp so up for trying something new. Im not one of those guys who's brand specific and usually im the guy with anything I buy to have something no one has, something different. However that new tracer braid has really caught my eyes so thats my go to wherever I can find it that is. Quote
