Unstringable rod?!

Okay so my buddies just got back into fishing, so i decided to bust out my old rod. It is a Fin-Chaser with an Okuma Ball bearing real.

On the actuall reel is says "BX-20" and has some measurments according to test of line and amount to put on.

The problem is EVERTIME i string it, tried it with 12 test 3 times and 8 test twice, it doesnt hold.

Like after i flip the lock off to cast (that metal loops that holds the string haha) and the line gets slack the string POPS out all over the place.

I strung it by running the line through the eyes of the rod and tying it to the reel(my reel spins clockwise) i then reeled in from the spare string in a counter-clockwise direction....still no luck.

Anyone know what im talking about? and maybe how to fix it?

sounds like you are overspooling it. Try putting less line on the reel.

Also, what pound test are you using and what brand?

Well according to the measurements on the reels it says 80 yards of 8 lb line, i put on MAYBE 30 yards and it still did it....

There any other causes of this you could think of? although this one does seem a good reason

Is the line "coiling" off the reel, that's what it sounds like?  12 is too heavy for that small a reel 8 max but I would go with 6.  Soak your line in hot tap water for 15 -20 minutes, that usually will relax the coil, it's not the brand or the reel.

Take some line off or tighten down on your brake. My buddy has one of those U.S. reels baitcasters. He let me look at it , No weight on the end of the line, I push the button(engage to cast) and the spool just starts spinning. He did't have anything set on his reel yet.

Maybe I am just not understanding what is being stated here. What I got out of it is everytime he engages the button to cast, the spool freespins causing a backlash. Like maybe the brake is not tight enough. Please enlighten me on what I am not getting.

Get a new spool of 8lb test monofilament and try to fill the spool about 3/4 of the way then tell us if it happens again.

Thank you Snook, I apologize for the ignorance. I honestly thought he was talking about some really old okuma baitcaster . I really do not know anything about spinning reels or anything from Okuma. The metal loops that holds the string thing was not real clear to me. I read it numerous times and it just did not ring a bell.Sorry guys.

I thought it was confusing myself, I looked the reel up before I posted.

To me it sound like simple line coil, which can drive ya nuts.

Please take some time to make sure that the line is coming off the feeder spool in the same direction it is going on to the spinning reel spool. If you let some line out off the reel, and kind of hold it in a loop, close to the tip, it is a sure sign you have some nasty coiling going on, usually caused by the line coming off in a different direction than it is going on the reel.

You can either let it out behind a boat, with the trolling motor going ( Nothing on the tag end at all) and then reel it back in or you can walk the line off in a field and rewind it, this usually will take care of twist.

 Mark your feeder spools with a marker or any other way, so you know what direction the line is coming off, it will save you a lot of headaches.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but make sure the drag isn't kicking in while your spooling.  The spool should not turn at all.

If you keep having trouble, you might try this method...  Get a new spool of line, and when you re-spool, put a pen (or similar item) to put through the spool, and have the line come off the bottom of the spool with a little tension on it.

I just finished spooling three spinning reels with 10 lb mono, and the line was perfect.  I've tried the "proper" way with mixed results, but never had line twist when doing it this way.

This happened on a saltwater rig of mine. Make sure you have quality line, the cheap bulk spools you buy at wal-mart are stiffer than a dead eskimo. (No disrespect toward Eskimos).

Regarding spooling a spinning reel I have read over the years to take the line off the top of the feeder spool, also have read take it off the bottom and yet again have read to just lay it on the floor label up.  What's to believe?  The few times I've mono put an at a BPS or tackle shop they take the from the bottom, I don't know if they are doing right or not.

I always troll behind the boat to get that line nice and tight, and at the beginning of most outings I'll troll it again to get the twist out.

Soaking my new line in hot water for 20 minutes always makes mono spool up better.

It is not a question of taking it off the bottom or top of the feeding spool. IT IS OF EXTRME IMPORTANCE IT COMES OFF THE FEEDER SPOOL IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS IT GOES ON THE REEL SPOOL .Mark each feeder spool ( if you get the 3000 yard spools) as to the direction ( clock wise  vs counterclockwise) with the labels facing up or down. Even different runs of the same brand can leave the spool differently in relation to label position. This is the main cause opf twist on spinning reels, closely followed by reeling in your line, as the fish is taking drag.You can back this information up by asking a reel pro like Reelmechanic and a few others here,

Why do you say it's not the brand? I feel like usually super cheap line (non-brand name) usually pops off like this.

Not when you soak it hot water first.  Case in point, last year I spooled a large spinning reel with 20# Shakespere supreme, about as cheap as you can go and I can't even tell you why I bought it.  Soaked it, went on the reel just fine and for the last year I have had no coil issues, line twist yes, but I troll out each time I take this reel out. No need to add additional success stories.

Spooling and coiling are issues I don't seem to have, I learned by own trial and error.

I'm not saying one line is better than another, find what works for you.
