I've got a pretty good selection of quality baitcasters and spinning set ups for myself.  We have some get togethers over at my neighbor's house which is actually on the lake as opposed to my house which is three houses away.  All our mostly non fishing friends think I am THE fisherman.  (Shows what little they know ;-)

Anyway, I had this old Zebco 303 with a POS rod I was letting them use with a swim Sinko and they were picking a bunch of dinks and having a blast.  Today, I took that outfit to the Wolf river because I knew I was so likely to drop it going over trees, rocks, etc.  While I was using it, I realized what a crap outfit it was.  I was ashamed to have let my friends use it.  I guess I have become accustomed to fine equipment. Shimano, St. Croix etc.  In defense of the Zebco, it was old and had been in the shed for years.  I had just put new line on it and oiled it.

So I bought one of the Cabela's XML rods, a 5'6" medium power BC rod.  What a deal, 30 bucks for a rod that msrp is 140.  So now I think I'd like to get the very best spincaster I can find to use on this rod for my visiting friends.

I am thinking about the Pflueger Cetina Spincast Reel which is about 40 bucks.  I want something that is easy to use but still enough quality to land the three or four pounders that cruise by from time to time.  I plan on putting 10# mono or even perhaps the Asian guys hybrid line.

So, a plenty long story for something you guys likely never focus on but if you have any suggestions for a good reel, I'd appreciate it.

Before my brother became familiar with baitcasters, he was a spincast junkie. He came to the conclusion that the Daiwa GoldcastIII was the best one out there.

I guess my wife isn't really into fishing at all but she will go out and humor me from time to time with my recently re-acquainted hobby.   I figured there isn't much sense in spending a lot of money on a rod and reel for her at this time so I've currently got her a Wal-Mart rod on an old Daiwa reel that is older than me. Anybody ever hear of a Daiwa Number 7 sold through the old Coast-to-Coast hardware stores? :-?

Anyways, from what I've heard, the Daiwa Goldcast is a pretty good reel as is the Zebco ZO3 Omega reel.  Doesn't Abu Garcia also make a pretty good spincast reel as well?

That 's a very nice reel but a rather expensive one ( $50 bones for a spincaster ! ) however not everything is that bad, you can get the cheaper version of it ( Silvercast ) for half the price :).

Since lil Raul manages to make a mess with every spinning reel I 've given to him ( I still wonder how he 's able to make them windknots that make a good backlash feel humble :-? ) I just purchased him that reel I mentioned.

The new 33s are crap. I bought one for each of my oldest boys as an upgrade from their 202s, and they're absolute junk. They're rough, and feel like a major step down from the 202. There's a reason they seal them in that plastic clam-pack. They know that nobody will buy them if they get to handle them first.

I've got a Omega Z03 and a 33 Platinum, and they're both light years ahead of the "standard" 33 in fit, finish, and function.

i had a zebco 33 until earlier this year, a no more than 1lb bass hit it so hard and stripped the gears on it when i was fishing a pond. i got the fish in but couldnt stand it slipping and grinding so called it a day after a few more casts. but my shakespeare tiger spincaster has been great to me and never given me problems. i actually consider it my lucky pole. i put 20lb stren on it and it will cast everything from light weight to heavy weight lures. i do plan to buy something to replace my 33 though as i cant stand seeing the empty rod without reel where i keep my fishing stuff. maybe the 33 platinum or 733. i also own a zebco 808 combo i use for catfishing at night, got 25lb trilene big game line on that...

Anybody remember the old Johnson reels? I got boxes and boxes of the things, 100A's, 100B's, etc, etc..

My fishing partner is a guide and he carries Omega for some  of his

clients. I have fished them some for bait and think they're great. My

buddy is on his third season with them, no maintenance has been performed and they are "brand new".

Just what the doctor ordered!
