Super User Dan: Posted July 8, 2009 Super User Posted July 8, 2009 I'm looking to get a new pair of decent to pretty nice sunglasses. I have been looking at Quattro, WileyX, etc...I want to spend under $100. Anyone have any good recommendations? How does the fitting work? I've seen some sort of sizing but I have no idea how it works or what size I would be... Also, I've heard copper/amber is a good all around tint for fishing most conditions--any truth to that? Quote
soccplayer07 Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 should have gone to boaters world. costa's for 100! JK. i think the revo deal with glasses sounds pretty d**n good. Quote

I've seen some sort of sizing but I have no idea how it works or what size I would be...Also, I've heard copper/amber is a good all around tint for fishing most conditions--any truth to that? I've heard the same thing about copper/amber colored lenses but I will mention that Oakley makes two fishing specific sunglasses - one for deep water (I imagine saltwater fishing) and one for shallower water. Both are blue iridium and the company claims the lenses still manage to provide enhanced color contrast and optimized depth perception. I think I would pay attention to the technology more so than a particular color but take it with a grain of salt cause they're definitely all just trying to sell you something. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 8, 2009 Super User Posted July 8, 2009 Go with Costa Del Mar. I tried every lens color they offer, the amber lens gave the best overall performance. The 580 green mirror is a little darker (the CDM mirror finish transmits about 10% less light), but blends the amber and copper. I would suggest the glass lens, but it is out of your price range. Completely scratchproof. The CDM sizing runs S/M, M/L, and L/XL. I have a huge melon and wear the L/XL frames. The M/L (specifically the Fathom) ran a little on the small side. Even the L/XL frames are a bit small on me, but are comfortable. Quote
MarauderYak Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I have more sunglasses than any individual should own. I have some I've bought mainly for their looks, some just for their function, and several in between. If you want the glasses that will function the best for fishing I suggest Costa. They have the best quality lenses, and good coverage. On bright days I prefer blue mirror lenses, but you might prefer one that lets more light through. My only functional knock on the Costa's I own is that neither pair I own are super comfortable (they're on the heavy side), and both pairs will sometimes slide down my nose a bit. But I'll still chose a pair of CDM glasses most of the time for fishing. I think Maui Jim's offer the second best lenses, and are lighter & more comfortable. I say second best lenses because their treatments don't do much for increasing contrast. They are easily on par with CDM when it comes to blocking glare & giving a distortion free view (in a lighter weight lense), but CDM lense colors & treatments are the best. I have a couple pair of Wiley-X, and that's actually who I went with for my motorcycle glasses. Their auto-darkening lenses work very well, and their glasses are comfortable. The lense quality is good, but I don't find it to be as good as CDM or MJ. Oakley are OK, but your paying more for their marketing than you are for their quality. I have a pair that I got way below retail, and I like them alright. They certainly to have some cool styles. 8-) The CDM & MJ are going to be over $100 retail, but you may be able to find a deal on e-bay (or another place on-line). Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 8, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 8, 2009 Burley, where can I get a pair of Costas for less than $100? I haven't looked too hard yet but most of the stuff I have found is at least $140. Quote
daviscw Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Color guide: http://www.costadelmar.com/SeeOutThere/Technology/PureLensPerfection/ Under $100: http://www.campmor.com http://store.opticalnation.com/costadelmar.html http://www.backcountryoutlet.com/outlet/group/100000324/Costa-Del-Mar-Sunglasses.html http://www.theyedoctor.com/products/_cid_10000-mid_10077__manufacturer.aspx I've had several pairs of Costa's and Oakley's. I've have the Costa 580 lenses. They were nice, but not worth the extra money and weight. Now I have the Fathoms with Copper/Green mirror lenses. Generally you want green mirror for inshore and blue for offshore. Amber and copper are great fishing lenses, and gray are great all around lenses. Quote
vatech Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I believe that Kaenon has some affordable prices and many top anglers use their sunglasses. Also, I had someone provide a great sales pitch for 7EYE sunglasses as well. Personally, I own blue mirror 400 lenses CDM and I think I could probably find something better. I think Maui Jim stingrays have great lenses, comfort (for me), and the ability to be worn around town doing things outside of fishing. However, I also am looking for some fishing specific sunglasses and have little regard for their look. One big thing for me is weight. I can't wear Costa 580s all day out on the water because their weight starts to give me a headache. If I'm going to be taking the glasses off after a couple hours then what's the point. Also, while I'm aware Costa's have great shatter resistance/contact protection, at a certain level I am still uncomfortable with having glass infront of my eyes (even though glass supposedly offers the best polarization). Some glasses have seals, some glasses have vents, some glasses have anti fog, some glasses have protection from sea salt air, others you can shoot a shotgun at and they remain intact. I think that I personally am going to give a shot to a lesser mainstream brand next pair I purchase. Old Harbor Outfitters has won an ICAST award the past two years for their technology but I had never even heard of them until I did some research. One thing you can do is get a pair at a place like Sunglass Hut. They have great glasses like Maui, Oakley and Revos (maybe Costas? I dunno) and you can take them out for 60-90 days or something and try them out and bring them back and exchange them for a different pair and compare to see what is good for your eyes and usage. stryk9 Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 i have a pair of jims and revos but find them to nice to take fishing... when im spending 200-300 bucks they arent coming with me... i have a pair of oakley half jackets i saw at cabelas on sale for $90 and love them for fishing and golfing. Quote
SimonSays Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 sierratradingpost.com new buyers get 20% off their first order I think! I got the costa del mar Tropic Star glasses there when they had them. They were around $60 and come with switchable Grey/Amber/Yellow lenses, all of which are polarized. I use them now and love em! Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 9, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 9, 2009 thanks, Simon. btw...who gets married on July 4th?!? clearly the only answer is people who want to ruin fishing trips... Quote
vatech Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Oh ya, another alternative if you have some time is to wait and see if you can't land a deal on a place like Woot.com or steepandcheap.com. Steepandcheap especially puts up costa del mar frequently and you can get them at a real fraction of the cost. I use a little widget notification at the bottom of my browser that I can just roll my mouse over and constantly see what deal is hosted that moment on S&C. Quote
armesjr Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Go with the Costas. Best bet is go try a bunch on, find the ones you want and then look around. After loosing 3 pairs of them, i actually found a pair of MP2's on ebay in perfect condition for 51 shipped. Quote
cwen Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 The only glasses i will ever use agaain are solar bats in mossback. I can see everything. Quote
jaym137 Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 If you are willing to spend a bit more, you should be able to find costa's on e-bay at quite a savings. I have Blue-Mirror 580's, which I use in bright sunny conditions. The Green Mirror 580's, to me are best I've ever had for sight fishing and seeing into the water. I like glass lens myself. I like the swordfish Costa's as they have spring temples and fit me the best. I tried a bunch on at Bass Pro and then bought elsewhere as E-bay had much better deals new. If at all possible try different pairs on at stores, since even great sunglasses suck if they don't fit you right and feel comfortable. Quote
