Refuse to Use Spincast

Hi all, I have a question for you. I love my baitcaster, it is for sure my reel of choice. Its nothing special, just a gandermountain guide series rod and reel, 7 bearings. Like all baitcasters, its hard to cast light baits, but I have a hell of a time casting openfaces. I just am bad at it, and I have been fishing on them since I was 10 up until recently when I went to the baitcaster. Yet, I dont want to go to a push button spincast either. My question is are there any baitcasters out there that can cast ultra light tackle?

Yes. The Daiwa Adavantage-A will cast light lures. But if you're gonna spend 170.00, you might as well go ahead and get a Calcutta 50B or 100B for 200.00, depending on how light you wanna go. Anyway, that at least gives you a couple of options.

What exactly is the trouble you have with spinning reels ?

Most of the ones these days manage line well, with the advances in bails, rollers, rotors, etc.

Here are some of the common causes of spinning reel line troubles:

1) Using too heavy line. 8# is generally the heaviest you should have on the average bass spinning rig. Don't be afraid of lighter lines. Thats what drag is for.

2) Closing the bail by turning the handle. ALWAYS close the bail by hand after casting.

3) Improperly spooling the line. Proper spooling is critical on a spinning reel.

Fishing with a spinning reel is something you are going  to want to learn.

There are baitcasters that will toss small baits far, but you've gotta be willing to fork out some money for them...

It also depends more on the rod that you are using

broke left wrist so fishing with a spinning rig.

can fish the same and do more with spinning rig then a baitcaster.

fishing tournament on Saturday and plan yo use only spinning rigs.

so please learn to use and master a spinning rig.   a spinning rig

if you cant cast more than 5 ft then im not so sure you know how to use them. perhaps the spinning reels you have arent suited for ultralight, or it could be the line youre using.

Obviously, you don't have a clue how to use them. Like mastering

nearly all equipment, a little instruction combined with a lot of practice

is required.

Just because you haven't used one doesn't mean that they don't exist.  

Plus, the most important part of the setup in throwing light baits is going to be the right rod.  The reel and line are secondary.

tyrius you are certainly right about the rod...it's a very important element of your combo when we are talking about finesse or ultra-finesse fishing with baitcasting reels.

obviously we also must say what are the lures we consider finesse lures...finesse in my opinion are straight worm 3'', little shaky head, micro jigs (1/16 or 1/8 oz) and similar lures

usually I use spinning reels to use this type of lures, but there also are very good baitcasting reels for this techique, instead very often they aren't very cheap and they are not very easy to use because they are really very free and you risk continuous backlash...there are daiwa pixy (very rare but very good) daiwa sol (cheaper and very good) and maybe also shimano cronarch 51mg....I have also heard Pinnacle Inertia Finesse are the right reels to start using finesse lures with baitcasters, but his performance are not obviously at the top (it has also a different price)

The basic mechanics of the cast are the same for both.

You need to let the weight of the lure load the rod for spinning or casting. I think however, you answered your own question. Since you don't like spinning reels to begin with, you are subconciously sabotaging your willingness to learn.  I think we all do that with something we really don't like.  ;D

If you really wish to be a well rounded angler (I am by way of my gut), it would behoove you to master the use of both reel types, or get a few pixies and chronarchs.  ;D Just stick with it and you'll do alright.

I dont understand why everyone is so upbeat on expensive reels to throw light lures. I switched to baitcasters this yr. I dont have the money to be caughing up over 100$ for a reel let alone 200$. Eventually yes I will siwtch to a nice daiwa or shimano but right now I am currently using 2 model baitcasters from wallmart. Pinnacle platinum plus with 8lb mono and a pinnacle solene with 50# powerpro braid with a 12lb mono 3ft leader. I was just throwing vry light poppers last night fine on the braided setup and vry far casts. Another thing i learned yesterday is if you hang the lure about 8" or so off the end of the rod rotate it in a clockwise motion and snap your wrist and let the bail go (well keep your thumb ligthly on it) I can cast even further and with really light lures..... Its all in practice. Unless these reels are just that good.

If you want a baitcaster that will cast those light baits a mile and won't make you have to dig that deep in your wallet. Go with the Revo S.

A ROD with the right action and length is more important than the reel. I am not stating that the reel isn't important it is, but a medium quality reel mated to the right rod for a particular lure size is better than a top of the line reel mated to the wrong rod.

IMO:

Best reels: Dawia Pixy Series or Shimano Chronarch MG $400/$200

Best Rod: G.Loomis Drop Shot Casting 820 6'10" Mag-L $250

So for $450 to $650 your casting skills are only limited by your ability not your equipment ;D.

I was just throwing vry light poppers last night fine on the braided setup and vry far casts.

What's considered "vry light"?  And what rod were you using?

Bass Pro has their Prolite and Extreme Lite reels, they are for finesse fishing and wont break the bank, just match with a ML rod.

Well I was looking at baitcasters today, and almost purchased a REVO SX. I found a killer deal on it, plus Abu is throwing in $20 refund on any reel $109.99 and above. So its really $20 off of the deal that I found. I figured before I jumped to any conclusions I give it a day to think on it.

Any one have any experience with this particular model? I know it was suggested above... I looked up all the specs, and a ton of reviews and they all seemed pretty positive, I only found one 3/5 star review and he was an avid tourney user, so I figure he is used to using reels $200+ and only had a minor issue, one of his bearings went out after 2yrs of using it, which is probably normal I would guess if it is getting beat every weekend.

As far as subconsciously not wanting to work with open faces, your probably right, but what cha gonna do?

P.S. I have a Gander Mountain Classic 7 Bearing system, paid $50 on a competitor rod ($20) as my current set up, and it works awesome for heavy baits, or a drop shot system. I can do some light stuff with it if I use a drop shot, otherwise I am making some good bird nest habitat. For anyone reading this looking for a good cheap setup that would be the way to go. I am planning on keeping this rod as an extra, I am limited right now. I only have this set up and 2 open faces, a mitchell and a cheap walmart $20 special. The mitchell is okay, but the walmart is a piece by anyones standards.
