My wife and I just got us some kayaks and she is wanting a rod and reel to carry with her. Most of the time we will fish for bass but sometimes we will fish some mashes along the coast. I have got a couple of reels but I need a good quality spinning rod that will hold 8-12 lb test for under $50.00.

Thanks

The Walmart Berkley Cherry rods are half that and are eminently fishable. If you want to spend the full $50, the BPS Bionic Blade is frequently onsale under $50. It is a much better rod than the Cherrywood but how much your wife would be able to distinguish is the question.

Cabelas has their xml rods on sale right now.  These are cabelas top of the line rods and are now starting at 29.99.  Better grab up a couple for yourself while you are there.

Berkley, CastAway, American Rodsmith, All Star, & Falcon all have economically priced products capable of detecting, hooking, fighting, and landing bass.

Absolutely concur, I have one and love it, just grabbed another for myself and one for a family member.  Now i just need a reel to go with it ;), maybe next year, I think I've blown my fishing budget for 09.

A thinking man would let her use your least favorite rod.  If/when she breaks it you'll be in position to sympathetically reply "That's OK honey, accidents happen.  I'll get another one."  Then UPGRADE!

That's why my wife has a cranking stick and I'm getting a Lucky Craft rod   ;D
