Super User iceintheveins Posted June 24, 2009 Super User Posted June 24, 2009 Do you guys think trilene XL is brittle and without much abrasion ressitance at all? Or am I smoking glue on this one? Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I wouldn't say it sucks excatly but it definitely wouldn't be my first choice Quote
Lipped M Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Like XL while its fresh, takes a couple of weeks to start coiling on me.I'll respool it when it does. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 24, 2009 Super User Posted June 24, 2009 Has its application for heavy structure and cover. Quote
LAO162 Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 If it sucked, it wouldn't be used as the benchmark in so many comparisons. It's a classic like a 1967 Camaro. Not the latest technology, but still does its job and fun to use. If it says 6#, breaks at 6# and doesn't have a lot of memory, it's working as advertised. That said, I don't use it anymore Quote

reo Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Do you guys think trilene XL is brittle and without much abrasion ressitance at all? Or am I smoking glue on this one? I use it a lot. Never "brittle" but does not have much abrasion resistance, not supposed too either. In open water or sparse cover it is fine for me. It is cheap so I respool every 5 trips or so. (I love fresh line) When conditions warrant an abbrasion resistant line I have rigs spooled up with yo zuri ultra soft. If you are looking for a line to put on the reel once a year XL is not a good choice, IMHO. Different tools for different jobs and as RW said "it is what it is" Quote
stryk9 Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 i love it for my spinning rigs... for baitcasters ill stick with my yo-zuri hybrid tho. Quote
ArcticCat500 Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I've used that line for years, but after switching to braid, I wont go back. It worked for me! Quote
Uncle Leo Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Why would you smoke glue? Not the best but does not suck, it has it uses. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted June 24, 2009 Super User Posted June 24, 2009 Has its application for heavy structure and cover. I think you're thinking about XT. XL is the thin, better casting stuff. I used to use it all the time. It is pretty manageable and it casts pretty well. I definitely wouldn't use it near any heavy cover though. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted June 24, 2009 Super User Posted June 24, 2009 Define 'suck'. It's quality cheap mono. Probably the same as Stren Original. Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 24, 2009 Super User Posted June 24, 2009 Been using it for more than 2 decades, wouldn 't have used it for so long if it sucked. However it does have limitations, not my first choice for wood or rocks. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted June 24, 2009 Super User Posted June 24, 2009 However it does have limitations, not my first choice for wood or rocks. Therein lies the key. It isn't line for fishing cover. It happens constantly. People buy line, use it in the wrong place, then say the line sucks because they were using it in a manner inconsistant with it's purpose. Quote
tyrius. Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 XL isn't brittle. It's extra limp or smooth casting. It's also not very abrasion resistant, but that's the whole point. If you want an abrasion resistant mono then buy XT (extra tough) or Big Game. If you want a superior managing line then get XL. Quote
NBR Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I've used it for years with no problem at all. It is my general purpose line of choice. Now with a little KVD line treatment I have it on reels for more than two years with no problem. I respool when I need more line. Little wood or weed in my lakes but lots of rock. I watch for abrasion very closely. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted June 24, 2009 Super User Posted June 24, 2009 Been using it for more than 2 decades, wouldn 't have used it for so long if it sucked. However it does have limitations, not my first choice for wood or rocks. Thank you raul...I couldn't have said it better. I got my spinning rigs with XL for light cover. Baitcaster rigs with XT for heavier cover. It's still my favorite line...I gave up trying to look for better line. I do like yo-zuri hybrid soft, but the stuff is getting harder to find. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted June 24, 2009 Super User Posted June 24, 2009 Gotti and Bruce got m to try it, my first full season using it, I have been more than pleased so far. Quote
BenoBreath Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 A good entry-level line for beginners. A good choice for guys who change their line after every 3-4 outings. Quote
I.rar Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 i use 6 lb xl on my UL rig and 10lb big game on the baitcaster. no complaints. and after some line butter? there is very little memory. Quote
Super User Tin Posted June 25, 2009 Super User Posted June 25, 2009 It is like fishing with a rubber band to me. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 25, 2009 Super User Posted June 25, 2009 I used it for a few months, worked fine, except like has been said, not very abrassion resistant. I switched to yozuri hybrid ultrasoft on all my reels. I voted No. It has it's place. Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 It is like fishing with a rubber band to me. X2 I know mono stretches but it does seem to have a little more give even when compared to other mono lines. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted June 25, 2009 Super User Posted June 25, 2009 It is like fishing with a rubber band to me. All lines feel like that...unless your fishing with braid. : Quote
