topwater trailor?

Hey fellas,wasnt to sure how to word it or search it,I know stuff has been posted before.

Been wanting to give it a try removing the rear treble on a Tw lure and add a length of line, and then a smaller bait to grab the attention of curiuos bass underneath.Was wanting a few opinions from anyone who has done this for 2 reasons:

1)What kind of Tw works good for this tactic?Popper,dog,prop?

2)A few opionions on what kind of trailor baits work well?

i remove the back hook and put a fly on the leader works good for me

I have tried this with a Pop-R.

I went to Orvis and purchased a beautiful blue and silver fly popper. It is about an inch to an inch and a quarter long and it is extremely light weight.  It has a white feather on its tail.

I tied the line from the rear treble hook on the Pop-R to the fly popper having the fly popper about 18 inches behind the Pop-R.

Never got a strike.

I am not saying that this rig does not work.  All I am saying is that I never got a strike.

So give it a try and let us know of your results.

On 3 lakes around here that get a lot of fishing pressure it has helped me put a limit in the boat in the morning or around dusk. With poppers, tie about a foot to foot and a half of line with a texas rigged senko, finesse worm, french fry, fluke. Doesnt really matter too much, atleast to all the smallmouth it doesn't. Their aggressive nature gets the best of them. But have also caught some largies on it to. You just see you popper go down like a bobber. It is just like a teaser rig imo.

I also like it best in real clear clear lakes.

Do a google search for the Alabama Rig. This is exactly what you are looking to do and it was invented by one of our own members.

I've tried small clousers and finesse worms as trailers behind poppers, buzzbaits, and even sammy's and have never gotten a strike on the trailing bait.

Not sure why but they just seem to ignore whatever it is hanging below the bait and go straight for the topwater.

I've heard the saltwater guys around here use a small jighead and grub,spoon,or even live bait.

Right now in Florida we can still bass fish no problem but they will not take a topwater for nothing,I was trying to figure out something new to show em.
