I'm new to this and have been using cheap line so far and I hear a crunch when it casts. I'm assuming that's because its not totally round like a quality line would be. I'm at the point that I can cast most of the time without a birds nest so my next step is distance. Thanks in advance. Eric. Quote

Trilene XL is very smooth, limp and manageable, but it 's very little abrassion resistant so don 't fish with it on rocks or standing timber. Quote

Heavier lures will "load" a heavier rod. To get maximum distance from light lures, a softer tip is helpful. I have great range casting a 1/2 oz XCalibur Xr50 on a St. Croix Avid AVC70MM/ Shimano Metanium spooled with #12 Yo-Zuri Hybrid. This same rig works for original Floating Rapalas and other light lures, too. 8-) Quote
Jameson Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 If your sticking with "mono" or co-polymer I cant say enough about how impressed I am with: 1) P-Line evoltion 2) Gamma Co-polymer (purple box) You will not be disappointed in either line. Both aren't as high stretch as normal mono, and the Gamma is very strong stuff. Evolution is not as abrasion resistant as gamma BUT it is smoother/slicker, however they are both very LIMP and the gamma is always straight not curled up after it is wet. No line conditioners needed. JC Quote

I can take the same line, same conditions, same bait but different rod and reel and have a totally different outcome. But if your stuck with your current setup, Trilene is good, I've always been a P-Line CX type of guy. I've never noticed any lack of distance, but then again, I've always had good equipment :-? Quote

skeetermike Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 More than the type is the line wt. Anything under around 10lb will cast much easier. I don't like P-line as much cause it tends to fray... I guess it doesn't have the abrasion resistance or something. I still use it for leader line though bc it disappears well being a flourocarbon. I like Trilene for its strength overall. There are some many out there though. I have a spinning reel loaded with PowerPro 6-20 braid. You can really pull up the bottom with that stuff! Quote
