For that price range I would look for an Accurist pt, can get them on ebay for $75 TYD. My brother has one and it is fantastic.

I have never touched a code so I am no help to you there.

Concur on the Accurist...as far as the Code goes, my experience was that it was not very well put together.  It was not very smooth compared to other Quantums I've used and the fit and finish was not up to the same standard as the Accurists or Energies that I'd had before.  And the shape was more clunky and awkward in my hand than the Accurist body style.  I've owned several Quantums over the years and enjoyed them all, except for the Code.  I got rid of it within a couple months of buying it.

i dont like quantum but im here to help...just so you know that code if you open it up inside it has plastic gearing,not something i would ever want on my baitcasters,id stay away from that reel and look at high up quantums if thats what your sold on.theres still room on the shimano side however if you still are thinking about jumping over haha. just messin lol

i dont like quantum but im here to help...just so you know that code if you open it up inside it has plastic gearing,not something i would ever want on my baitcasters,id stay away from that reel and look at high up quantums if thats what your sold on.theres still room on the shimano side however if you still are thinking about jumping over haha. just messin lol

I'm pretty sure the main gear is brass.  If the main gears were plastic this reel would weigh a lot less than 9 oz.  The gear that drives the level wind in pastic.  But that gear is plastic in almost every baitcast reel (Shimano included).

I love my Code. Solid reel that feels good in the palm. I am a big fan of quantums acs brake system now. I would hate to have a baitcaster without one.

I don't have the Code but do have the Accurist PT and last years Energy PT. I handled the code and read some of the reviews and I agree with picking up either an Accurist PT or even an Accurist II. Tackle tour did a review of the Accurist II which was pretty good. You can find any of the 3 on ebay or some other sites fairly reasonable

As far as "plastic gear" in the Code, this is a mirepresentation.  The Code has a brass main and pinion gear.  The plastic gears are non stressed "idler" gears that actuate the levelwind wormdrive.  Just like some other "high end" reels, like Steez, TD-Z, Calais, STX, etc.:

Like stated above, the main and pinion drive gears are Brass. The Idler gears are a nylon composite (not plastic) and used for the fail safe on the levelwind/retrieve worm gear system.

If the reel tries to hang while cranking, and, the angler cranks through the bind that nylon gear blows out to save the main and pinion gears. It is on all BC reels LP and Round...

I have been fishing my code for about 2 years and am beginning to have problems with it.  Before it started crapping out on me it was a good reel.  Some say it's a loose reel but for the $79 I payed for it I was very pleased, true it doesn't feel as tight or sturdy as the PT series, but why would it, it's half the price, or at least it was when I got mine.  For the longest time it was my only baitcaster and was fished pretty heavily when I got it...took a few trips into the lake and still ran good with cleaning and lubing.

Now to my problem, when I reel and then stop, the spool keeps spinning and makes a clicking noise, not sure what this is or it is easily fixed.  For the price they are going now, $129 at Wal-mart which is ridiculous, I would look into a Catalyst PT.

Overall, I would recommend the Code at the $79 price range, I think they are $84 at TW.

I think it's accurate to say you are getting what you pay for with this reel when compared to the higher end Quantum reels. I can't compare the Code to other brand name reels as I don't own any.

I've heard mixed reviews on the Code. My only experience with one is a store model at BPS. I have to agree with A-Jay, it didn't feel as solid as my Quantums (Accurists and Energy PT's).

By the way Reel Mech, my Accurist PT I sent you quite some time ago is STILL holding up great and its almost as smooth as my new Energy PT's I have!

This usually caused by the angler engaging the spool while the lure is still in flight (and can happen on any reel).

That is the pinion gear not re-leasing (going into free spool) all the way, and, the drive engagement pin is not clearing the pinion base. This should be remedied as quickly as possible, it will just get worse (slots in pinion get rounded off) to the point that your spool will rotate on hook set clicking very loud...

Quantum reels are all I have used since the mid 80's. In fact I have 5 from back then that are stick kicking bass, working as good as the day I bought them. Keep them clean and lubed properly and they will last a long time.

I have not used the code but IMO I would agree the Accurist PT over the Code, but I would also recommend saving a few extra bucks and getting the Catalyst PT instead for that would be your better bet.

I own 3 EX reels and 2 MG reels from back in the day, 2 Accurist PT's, 1 Catalyst PT, 7 Energy's and 6 Tour PT's. I also have two old Browning reels of which I believe where made by Quantum back then, there exactly the same part for part, same part numbers, same looks and all, and have never had any problems with any of them. In fact the only problem I have seen with them is my fishing partners reels in which he never cleans or lubes them and I don't care what brand you buy, if you don't take care of it, it's not going to take care of you.
