DINK WHISPERER Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 After years of using monofilament and fluorocarbon line for all my flippin'/pitchin' techniques i am ready for a change. This past weekend i hooked into a bass that i am 100% sure was my new PB(atleast 11lbs) while pitchin' a field of hydrilla/cattail mix. It wrapped me up in a clump of slop so i tried to winch it out as i usually do. Then, my 25lb BPS XPS fluoro snapped, i almost cried you guys! So, i have decided to switch to braid. Most of the lakes i fish are kind of a greenish tea color. What size braid do you guys recommend i use. Also, what brand is the best so to speak? Quote
jasonl Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 just happened to me the other day. but i was actually using braid but he wrapped around the post and it cut the line Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 For flipping/pitching, go with 50lb power pro, you won't be disappointed. Quote
aarogb Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I think the Power-Pro is the best braid. As for line size I wouldn't go below 50 lbs. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted June 4, 2009 Author Posted June 4, 2009 Would 65lb Power Pro braid be too big? I will also be pitchin' thick lily pad fields. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted June 4, 2009 Super User Posted June 4, 2009 With Shimano's purchase of Power Pro, if you keep your eyes open you can find a deal on the line. Quote
coryjames Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 im a shimano guy 100% but diawa samerai braid,is the best thinnest smoothest i have used.i think suffex is very close.welcome to the braid family 8-) Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted June 4, 2009 Author Posted June 4, 2009 I will be dropping by Bass Pro this Sat so i will check the different braids out i guess! Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted June 4, 2009 Super User Posted June 4, 2009 as i have said before, powerpro is from the stone age.the new berkley fireline braid (not regular fireline) in 65 lb is my choice. Quote
adclem Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 The new Samurai braid is the best, then Power Pro. I did not care for the new Fireline braid at all. Later, Quote
Bass Bass Bass Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I have had problems with wind knots when using power pro, suffix to me is the best! Quote
Use ONLY Stren Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I use either Stren Sonic Braid, or Super Braid, Sonic is the limpest braid that I have ever used but doesnt hold its color very long but its strong and limp. Super braid holds its color for just about ever and is strong as steel cable. I might get bashed for this but I think Power Pro is crap. From my experience its stiffer than wire leader and doesnt cast very well. Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Would 65lb Power Pro braid be too big? I will also be pitchin' thick lily pad fields. No not at all, you would be fine with 65lb Power Pro. And, as somebody else said, do not buy Fireline, Fireline Crystal, Fireline Braid, all of it sucks IMO. Quote

I guess i will check out Suffix too! Quote

From the stone age? I tried Firline a while ago and it is absolute garbage IMO! I had it break on little snags so i bought new spool, same thing! Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted June 4, 2009 Super User Posted June 4, 2009 I think there is some merit in checking out one of the new 8 strand braids rather than the older 4 strand varieties. (Several have been mentioned above.) Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted June 4, 2009 Author Posted June 4, 2009 The only bad thing i keep hearing about Power Pro is that the color does not last very long! How about Spider Wire camo? Quote
midnighthrasher Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Power Pro all the way!!! Me and all my buddies use it. Great stuff. I use 30lb on baitcast and 20lb on spinning gear. One of my buddies loves trying everything. He changes braid, mono and fluoro every week and he always complains and comes back to power pro. As for the color it will fade but i dont think it changes anything. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted June 5, 2009 Super User Posted June 5, 2009 i too love and only use Power Pro , but if you are gonna use something else , use a SPECTRA braid . all those other materials just don't last . you will here of people having Power Pro braid on there reel for YEARS !! it just flat out performs when you need it and won't fall apart like other braids .... Super User Micro Posted June 5, 2009 Super User Posted June 5, 2009 I can't stand Sufix braid. I tried it once and striped it off my reel. The stuff is so bright it sticks out like a sore thumb. Still the best I've tried is Stren Super Briad (no Sonic Braid IIRC). Fireline Braid looks good, too. I'm going to try that next. Quote
