Inexpensive Swimbait Rod

I know some can run well into the 300.00 range..I don't have that kinda $$$ to spend on one at this time. The reel would be the Curado 201E7. Any suggestions..?

BPS NITRO big bass rod. I was 1 mouse click away from getting one myself. but i dont fish swimbaits enough to justify having a whole r&r dedicated to swimbaits.

like any one will tell you , what are you planning to throw ???? my theory is , get the rod that you won't regret not getting cause it's not stout enough , cause if your gonna later on throw 5-6 oz baits , well , you need a heavier rated stick . that's why my rod i'm having built is rated 3-8 oz. baits . that way i'll be covered thru most baits .... hope this helps in your selection. btw, i would recommend the 7'11'' heavy 1-6 oz. rod by OKUMA .

For smaller swimbaits (~2 oz and under), my BPS Extreme 7'6" H does fine.  And you can get it on sale for $70

I use a older  heavy lightning rod for my ventures of swimbaits its 7 foot and does 1 to 3 oz comfortable i think it was 35 bucks ,now if i was into swimbaits more id get a Okuma

I will tell you that the 7'6" H is a GREAT all around rod.  it can handle a variety of swimbaits.  All the way from 1.2 oz 3:16 minnows to 8" ROF16 hudds and everything inbetween.  It holds up well to abuse and is at a great price point.  The only complaint I have is the hook keeper SUCKS!!!  I ended up drilling a hole in the trigger for a hook to pass through.

As far as the 7'11" MH goes, you could expect to throw most swimbaits in the light to medium/light range.  I would personally go with the Heavy rod, just because it gives you more versatility in weights of bait.  You can still throw the smaller baits (1oz). The MH might throw baits down to 3/4 oz, but i'm sure you already have rods that can throw 3/4 oz baits, therfore there is no reason for another.  

Anyway, it really depends on what you are going to throw. Just remember one thing, even though you might only throw small 1-3 oz baits now, think about the future and if you start to really get into swimbaiting, your going to want to upgrade.

I'll be throwing mainly Mattlures hard bluegill, and other lighter baits, the Mattlures weighs 1.65 oz..so now I'm thinking the 7'6" MH would be better..?

you don't even need a swimbait rod for those light lures , a decent flipping stick will do , for that matter , a regular heavy action rod would suffice . :

x1.  For those small baits, you don't really need a "Swimbait Rod"  If you already have a flippin stick, or even a Heavy rated rod, you might just consider pulling double duty with them.  If you don't have a rod that can handle 1.5 oz baits, then the 7'6" MH Okuma that you mentioned would be perfect for your needs at the moment.

Well, I went and bought my rod, and reel today, got a Smokein deal on the Shimano Calcutta rod, 7'6" MH, was only a few bucks more than the Okuma..also didn't buy the Curado, a low profile reel just didn't seem to "fit" on the bigger handle, so I got the Cardiff 201A, spooled up with yozuri 12lb hybrid.

Gonna take it for a test run tomorrow.

Well good to see you got your SB combo..but I was going to sugest the St. Croix MOJO swim-bait rod...great rod....I bought 5 Mojo's this season and could not be happier...

Thanks...I have looked at the Mojo's in the past..the deal on the calcutta was just to good to pass up.

Got to do some casting at the local city pond, still gettin use to it, but at least the distance is fine, just gotta get within a foot of my target..lol

I'll be at the lake tomorrow, and hopefully get some bass with the new rig..

I'm by no means a swimbait expert, but i think heavier line is advisable.  17lb at the minimum.

check out the Daiwa Zillion swim bait rods! the Zillion series are amazing rods in the 200 dollar price range and the performance is amazing at the price point check out TDZL741XHFB or the TDZL801HFB.. I own two of each and love them super super light and well balanced rods that have a life time warranty and simply perfect actions! if you want to spend less then that check out Daiwa Light and Tough   TL-801-5FB or TL-801-6FB you can pick them up new on Ebay for 129 and free shipping the L&T series are VERY good rods awesome actions and balanced really well and look d**n sexy too! there not as light as the Zillions and dont have Fuji Sic guides like the Zillion but still makes a super sweet swim bait rod for a really good price I have the TL-801-6FB and the L&T Flipping stick and both are sweet rods with mega comfortable reel seats (not quite as comfortable as the Zillion reel seats) and high quality build from tip to butt.

Another good rod that I own and use is the Daiwa S series flipping stick TD-S76THFB you can get them new for 90-100 bucks shipped. its a great flipping stick and it doubles as a lighter swim bait rod and has a great tip for swim baits not something that can be said for most flipping sticks. I got a Daiwa I'ZE Millionair light on my S rod and the rod handles baits from 3/8's to 2oz's perfect its only rated to 1 1/2 oz's but it can handle a 2oz bait just fine. and when you need a really good flipping stick its there for you.

one last combo that I have owned and was very sweet if you are a Quantum fan is the Quantum Superlight QTX767F the tip is very much a flipping rods tip and kinda stiff but all in all it works GREAT for flipping and pretty good for swim baits from 1/2oz to 4oz's I had a Quantum energy pt 760 on it and used it for swim baits over 2oz's was a nice combo but I sold it on Ebay about 6 months ago because I have pretty much went all Daiwa JDM cept for a few USD Zillion reels and Steez rods and reels.

I also have a Carrot stix LTX CLTX-791XH-F-C swim bait rod that Is listed on ebay for 115.00 buy it now and free shipping. and a Carrot stix LTX CLTX-701XH-F-C that will be listed on Ebay later this evening buy it now 115.00 and free shipping.. both rods are mint condition and dont even look used. I bought a total of 10 E21 rods 6 Carrot golds and 4 LTX's and dont use them so all are being sold on Ebay. dont get me wrong they are sweet rods for sure but Im a Daiwa, Megabass and evergreen kinda guy so they just didnt have a place in the rod locker once I used them for a bit I kinda got cought up in the new technology deal and bought way to many. only one that will not be sold is a 7'MH fact action Carrot gold and a 6.9MH parabolic LTX crankin rod.
