michael Lynn Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I currently use a shimano spirex 2000 rear drag with the lever to fighting drag. I'm looking to replace it and upgrade as well. I fish with shiners from shore and light to light/medium tackle.. I'm also looking for a nice matched rod about 5ft or 5'6" 1 piece rod. I havent been in the market for years so i'm not too familiar with the stuff thats out there. I'd like to be in the 100-125 dollar range on the reel and 50-75 for the rod can any of you recommend some stuff? I'm in South eastern Massachusetts if that helps. Quote

Spinning rod in 5'6" ...... you going UL ? Spinning outfit in the 125 dollars Without thinking it too much: Shimano Sahara + Shimano Clarus rod ( IMHO the best rod you can purchase with 70 dollars ). 21farms Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 micheal, some in the flea market forum here is looking to trade the newer model spirex for the older model spirex that you have. anyway, if you have been out of the fishing equipment market for awhile, one of the first things you'll notice is that rods have gotten longer. whereas 5'6" used to be the norm, nowadays, most are closer to 6'6". the extra length really aids in setting the hook and getting extra distance on your casts. i agree with raul about the clarus rods...best bang for the buck in the category. The reason i am looking for a shorther rod id I'm fishing off the shorline and in the woods. I dont have a boat and I don't always have enough clearance for anything longer. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 4, 2009 Super User Posted June 4, 2009 I Completley agree with Raul..as I have the Clarus, and the Shara. Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 4, 2009 Super User Posted June 4, 2009 The problem Michael with the rod length you are looking for is that most of what you find are UL rods, 6 feet rods come in a lot more power ratings, in 6 ft you can find practically all the ratings. Quote

Super User Muddy Posted June 4, 2009 Super User Posted June 4, 2009 If you can side arm cast. with a lob action 6 ft would probaly give you the choice of power and action you would need for bass fishing Quote

That should be fine. So what are we looking at for good choices in that price range now. I'd say 175-200 for the combo Quote
uicdent11 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I'd sell you a 6'3 St. Croix M XF rod for $90 shipped. I measured it against another 6'0 rod and the exposed rod is the exact same length.(5ft. from top of cork to end of last guide). The rear grip cork on the st. croix is where they put the extra 3 inches. I think it would suit your needs just fine. Let me know if you are interested. I have pics available. As for a reel, you can find great deals in the flea market. Any shimano or daiwa reel that is in your budget would work great. Quantums seem pretty smooth, but they are a probably too heavy for such a short/light rod. Quote
