G. Loomis GL2

What are the thoughts about these rods? How do they compare to other rods in that price range?

I am looking at the MBR783C specifically.

I own a 6' med. hvy. GL2 that ive had for about 6 months. I use mine mainly for casting jigs and soft plastics. I think its a very good rod it's preformed well for me, its very light and sensitive.

I've quoted that same sentence many of times.  While the IMX marks a significant upgrade in blank performance versus the next model down (GL3), comparing the GL2 to other rods at it's price point recently left me with an impression that is was lighter than most all of the rods at that level.  The GL2 won't be a life changing experience (like the first time I fished an IMX), but it definitely competes at it's price point.

Otherwise, I suggest looking at the St. Croix Avid series.

The Avids I would recommend instead of the MBR843C are

AVC68MXF or AVC70MF.

My personal thoughts on both the GL2 and GL3 is that for a rod in which you use in which sensitivity is not the main concern such as say Crankbaits, Topwaters, Frogs and such, these rods fit the bill just fine, in fact for frog fishing I have found the GL3 can take the hard hook sets with braided line a bit better then the IMX and with Crankbaits the GL3 has a little more give to help in not pulling the hooks out of the fishes mouth. (However you can find a IMX model that does Cranks well to)

For sensitivity, like worm & jig fishing for example, IMX is hands down the better choice.

However, I am not sure what the GL2 cost, but there are cheaper, better rods then the GL3's price range. The Quantum Tour rods for example are every bit as light as a GL3, in fact there almost as light as the IMX, have better guides and are stronger, for up to 100 and some dollars less then the GL3. But you can't beat the G-Loomis warranty and service. Quantum has lifetime to, but it takes a lifetime to get your rod back also. Another example of service is, I had a G-Loomis in which the top guide needed replacing. E-mailed G-Loomis and a few days later I had a package with about 6 top guides. Same thing happened with a Tour rod and Quantum's response was to send the whole rod in. I think not Vern, Not for something that simple that I can fix myself.

There are better rods available at the same price points as gl2 and gl3.

I am looking into a MossyBack Loomis. What are your thoughts on that line?

I own 2 Mossybacks BCR 853 & 854.  I like them just as much as my IMX's.  I would recommend.  Planning on buying the 7'1" spinning rod in the Mossyback for next year.

I have a 6'6" Mh GL2 that I like to use for spinnerbaits.  The nice thing about Loomis is the warranty.  I broke my old GL2 last year after using it for 5-6 years.  I spent $60 and had a new one at my front door in 3 days.  For worm/jigs I would go with the IMX if it's in your budget.

Mossybacks are good rods at a decent price but as has been stated you do not get the true loomis feel until you get an IMX or GLX.

Can't speak about the GL2 but I have a GL3 and its a nice enough rod but its definitely not a IMX. Sensitivity wise its about the same as my carrot stix which is both cheaper and lighter. Still, you gotta love the loomis warranty...

I have several GL2s, they were my first GLoomis rods, they are nice rods but there are a bunch of rods as nice as GL2 for about the same price like Crucials, I 'm not going to say Avids because they are a little more expensive ( better bang for the buck than the GL2 ).

If you really want to know what 's all the hype about GLoomis you better start with an IMX.

I own IMX rods and Mossyback rods, both are excellent choices.
