bigtimfish Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I still use one for a shallow crank and wakebait reel. It is a gooood reel for the money. honestley. i have yet to have a problem with mine. its not the best in world but for less than $80 it would be hard to beat. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Very hard to beat for about $50 on Ebay! I use one for spinnerbaits/buzzbaits and i love it. I had my worm reel lock up on me while fishing a lake once. I locked the drag and actually used the SilverMax to pitch plastics in pads and bullrush and it performed like a champ! Very versatile IMO! moloch16 Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I have one and it is a great reel for the price. Casts like a dream, drag and spool control is easy to adjust. I highly recommend. Quote
Simp Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 My dad abd I share a combo that has this reel. My Dad loves it and prefers it over his PT. I think it was a very good reel for the price we paid . It's a good medium crankbait reel and does well with topwater. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted May 20, 2009 Super User Posted May 20, 2009 I had a couple I test drove for a few months. They cast a mile. No problems tossing small baits with these. My problem was intermittant weird noises occurring on every 8-10 casts or so, as though stuff wasn't linking up correctly on reel engagement. They also just didn't feel solid though I will say all my other reels were Revo's at the time. For the money though, good reel. Longevity???? Quote
Cavfirst Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I run these and the Black Max reels exculsively and have been for a couple years now fishing atleast 3 times a week and I have had only one reel the anti-reverse went bad and I had to replace the drag washers on another one but I think that 22 lb alligator gar had something to do with that on 12lb test p-line go figure but I got my crank bait back anyways. You do have to keep your maintenance up on them clean, oil and grease a couple times a year or they start to make some noisy but that's not a big deal I have had to turn up magnetics on them when throwing small cranks in the wind but I keep my tension pretty loose. Great little reels overall I have actually modified one of the Black Max to a 5.1 for deep cranking so far the reel is holding up great but its still in the testing phase that will be another post. Abu makes great products I dont think you can go wrong with them. 8-) Quote

WHY HAVENT I THOUGHT OH THAT?????????? would any expeirienced reel mechanic be able to perform this task? Quote
FishingPirate Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I was lucky enough to pick one up NIB for 28 bones in a pawn shop. Its not a bad reel but I dont fish it as hard as I do my others. Quote
Cavfirst Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 8-)The problem with modifying the existing reel is finding the parts to do it with it took me about 6 months to find the right reel to swap out the main gear and pinon to a slower 5.1 which is actually out of a pfluger reel I bought off ebay it fit perfectly in the black max frame and all other existing parts were the same. That's the deal with low profile bait casters they all are built basically the same I ve torn just about every brand imaginable down cheap and expensive just because I am one of those guys who just has to see how it works the difference in my opinion is the quality of the parts and that's were the expense comes in so sure BigTim anyone can do this modification and so far on this project it is working out great.
