Which line for 4000 spinning reel

I had planned on putting 6# yozuri ultra soft on it until I looked at the spool and it recommends 8,10, 0r 12 # line.  Everyone here recommends putting the 6# yz us on spinning reels.  I don't see the benefit of going to the 8# yz u.s since it does not really provide a signifcant increase in breaking strength  Should I go ahead and put the 6# on that big of reel.....or just go with something different ....like mono backer with braid and a fluor leader.???

Go ahead and put it on.  I don't pay attention at all to the line reccomendations b/c you don't see any manufacture putting any reccomendation for 20lb test on a curado or revo or simular reel.  However to save money, on all of my reels and fill half with backing line in a standout color like red or green and fill the rest with the line I want to use in a clear color.  That way I know when I see red or green, its time for me to put on some new stuff on top.

I never consider the numbers imprinted on the spool as a recommendation but just a guide to what the capacity would be for a certain test line.

First and foremost question is what are you going to use the reel for?  For 6# I would think it's for smaller fish like bass, a 4000 series reel is larger than I would use.  If you have a second spool and going to use for larger species, ok that works.

Personally I'm a braid man, but your reel your choice.

I'm not a big fan of topshotting but it does save money and 4000 takes a lot of line and much more than what is actually used.

I will use the 4000 spinning reel mostly this fall.  I have a lighter setup and smaller shimano (spirex?) for my bassin'.    

We will be trolling...mostly for northern pike.  We catch an occasional walleye, a few smallies, and an occasional sheepshead.  The only reason I was considering the 6# yo-zuri ultrasoft on the big real is because it has such a high breaking strength.

I have to buy the 6# for my smaller reel anyway....I guess I am leaning toward trying the braid on the bigger reel since we do mostly staigth line trolling with large rapals (7 inch) and other cranks.  Seems like the braid would work great for this type of thing....any other suggestions or comments are welcome1

I use 8# on my shemano 2500..works great..you could go to 10# easily..your choice..

The only trolling I do is in the ocean on a conventional rig, 20# pline fluroclear & 5000 & 6000 spinner with 20#,30#braid.

I would see no problem trolling with 20braid# on a 4000, if you choose mono I would suggest soaking the filler spool in hot water for about 5-7 minutes, that will take the coil out of it and it will lay on the reel spool perfectly.

Someone may have a better freshwater trolling option, I haven't done it in 40 years.

You can certainly put on 6# yozuri. It just means that your 4000 reel is going to hold a heck of a lot of it. I would recommend putting some mono backing, maybe 50% of the spool filled with the mono of your choice, say 10# since it is probably close to the breaking strength of the yozuri, or any other line for your backing.

You could fill the whole thing with Yozuri, but that bottom 50% is probably never going to see any use, a waste IMHO of a fine line.

thanks everyone.  I may try it both ways this year. (mono backer for the summer and 6# yo-z U.S for bass......then switch over to the braid for pike fishing....with a leader of course!).

If I listened to every recommendation here I would not even have a 4000 spinning reel for bass. However I have 3 and like the larger spool diameter. I use 10lb Yo-Zuri Ultra soft for open water plastics and 12lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid for skipping around and under boats and docks.

Smaller 2500 set-ups for Shakey head etc I do use 6 lb. Hybrid.

Soak in KVD lure and line.
