LAO162 Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 It seems that those who use the Cabelas XML are big fans of it. Is the action of the MH rod (either casting or spinning) suitable for worms & jigs. How about the new MagTouch than looks like a Lamiglass. Thanks! Leon Quote
twors Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I looked over the Mag Touch rods last night at Cabelas. I kinda like them, the build looked pretty good to me and the graphite grip had a nice texture to it so I don't think it would be as slipperly as one would expect. I don't think I seen a $100 rod with alconite guides before but some how Cabelas has made this happen. I liked them alot but I didn't buy one just yet....still recovering from the two Mossybacks and the Curado I bought myself for xmas. Quote
ghost Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I bought 5 of the Magtouch & 2 XMLTi rods. The XMTi rods are on sale this weekend for $110 at the stores only. I've been waiting for the Magoutch rods to show up at the Cabelas store by me, finally did! I also have been waiting for the Carrot Stix, but no show on those....so when I saw the XMTi were on sale, I jumped on a couple & have a third one on hold till next week, for the sale price. The Magtouch are much nicer than I expected them to be. The handles since it's all graphite is much thinner in feel than a rod w/ cork grips. But the texture is good, I thought I had to add some type of wrap so my hand wouldn't slip. Overall, the actions are spot on w/ what they are for the specific rods. I ended up getting 3 Magtouch combos. Quote
twors Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 My local Cabelas had Carrots in stock but I wasn't impressed at all. Big news is that Cabelas now carries Powell rods and man,are they super nice. Probably the nicest constructed production rod I've seen and they felt great IMO. I would of bought Powells instead of the GLoomis Mossybacks for my xmas if they would of had them in stock at the time. One thing I won't buy unseen or felt is rods. Quote
LAO162 Posted March 10, 2008 Author Posted March 10, 2008 Thanks for the input! The bait monkey had to go on a crash diet this weekend so I ordered a closeout MHF XML and Prodigy reel. Although not the ideal combo, it seemed like a good compromise for my situation. I think it's a good learning combo for this year to help me determine what I'll want in the future. Long term, it's a good camping rig since it's not so expensive that I'll go into fits if it gets lost or broken. Cheers Quote
bassin_man Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 According to their website some of the 6'6" casting rods are one pieces and other 6'6" and 7' rods are two piece rods. Does anyone know why they did this? I was interested in getting a deep crankbait rod until I seen it was two pieces. I hate two piece rods. Quote
mixmasterg Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Have you guys fished with Mag Touch? I was looking at a Medium weight spinning for finesse stuff..I haven't been able to see one though! Got to feel it first Quote
Super User Muddy Posted May 11, 2009 Super User Posted May 11, 2009 Hey LAO, please post a review. I tried the Mag Touch rods in the store, I really liked them I did not get one as I was afraid of wet hands and a flying rod. without any grip to speak of. Thats probally unrealistic, but I am staying pat with the Fish Eagle II's Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I have both the XML and Mag Touch and even an XMLTi. All of mine are 2 pc with the XMLTi being the only MH. The XML's I have 3 with one being the rig & jig, a ML and a Medium and all spinning. I did use the Mag Touch this weekend with a swim jig and have to say it was my go to setup this weekend. The rod is paired with a Quantum Catalyst PTI-A20 and it worked great and no problems with the hands getting wet and the rod slipping out of my hands. I'm fishing shore and it worked great for me all weekend with a string of 2lb fish on both a saturday and sunday outing. Right now with a cold front rolling thru on both saturday and sunday the crankbait bite was off and I put the swim jig thru its paces with the rod and its a great rod and thinking of getting a MH casting as well. Super User Jeff H Posted May 12, 2009 Super User Posted May 12, 2009 so I ordered a closeout MHF XML and Prodigy reel. Although not the ideal combo, it seemed like a good compromise for my situation. I think you will be surprised. Those reels are great!! Quote
LAO162 Posted May 12, 2009 Author Posted May 12, 2009 Muddy, where'd you dig this thread up? :) Even though I received confirmations at the checkout and by email, ultimately XML was out of stock. So, they sent my the reel without a rod... > After annoying about 5 idfferent Cabela's reps with calls, they finally took the whole order back on their dime. So, I never got to try the XML. However, that gave me the opportunity to try a Techna AV instead ;D I'm still intrigued by the XML, but I'm sure that by the time I have discretionary income (in a month or two), the clearance sale will be over Cheers!
